| Anyone skied around Mt Myra? I am thinking of trying to get to the top either via NW ridge or hikers route. Then skiing down one of the same routes. Any thoughts or suggestions? |

Season is all but done but I thought I would add some info for anyone searching at a later date:
My buddy and I summited Mt Myra mid-April. I was on skis, he was on a splitboard. The approach to Tennant Lake is dead easy - cat track all the way. Just before Tenant Lake you need to cross East Tennant creek creek and the bridge will most likely be covered in snow and/or not useable. But there was enough snow cover for us to cross at another spot.
The first time I tried this trip, I tried to access Myra's West ridge from the north end of the lake. This was a total gong show. I think the summer trail is here, but in winter it did not seem possible as there were cliff bands that I could not find any way through - if anyone has done it this way in the winter, I'd be interested to hear how it went.
The second time - on a tip from some other skiers - we skied to the south end of the lake and accessed the ridge from a drainage gully at the south end of Tennent Lake. It was very hard packed and icy so it was not easy but I think with better snow conditions this route would be pretty easy. Once up the draiange and onto the ridge, its easy going all the way to the summit.
We skied from the top of Myra down the north/northwest ridge. I wanted to try the gullies on the northwest side of Myra but they were littered with chunks of snow broken from cornices and there didn't seem to be any open lines. Anyone done these gullies? - any advice on getting through the cornices on the top and into them?
We broke west off the ridge at the point where it comes to a bit of a col and descended down an avi path right down to East Tennant Creek. Probably not a good idea in the winter or when avi conditions are less than perfect. Then back down the cat trail. 9 hours up, 2 hours down.
Hope this helps someone ... |

Brave adventorous guys, should have made a TR out of it. Go check it out in the summer months, just watch for oversized bruins and bugs. |

WBaker - the gully you describe from the south end of the lake is the better route in winter/spring basically when there's enough snow to cross the lake safely. The trail route from Tennent Lake up onto the ridge from the east side of the Sandbag ridge is doable under snow conditions but it really helps if you know the trail in summer to find your way through the maze of bluffs in the lower meadows and up the steep slope onto the Sandbag ridge. Even if you know it the trail, the route can be hazardous so your route from the south end of Tennent is the right choice.
Actually we followed your tracks a few days later May 12. East Tennent Creek had thawed out too much to cross on the snow although we could see your tracks. So I cut steps onto the bridge, it took 20 minutes but it was the best option and made the return trip easy.
Most of these lines have been skied. I'm not sure about every gully but it's a fairly popular area. |
