Lynn & I spent some time in Hawaii. We did a few short hikes.
Mar 3 - Captain Cook Monument Trail
A 4 mile return trip with 1300 feet loss to the Ocean. Most hikes in Hawaii start downhill, either to the Ocean or a Volcano Caldera.

This is Kealakekua Bay with the best snorkelling in Hawaii and where Captain Cook had his worst day.
Mar 4 - Volcano National Park
Kilauea is spewing a lot of nasty VOG, consequently all the trails and roads on the west side of the park are closed. We first hiked the Kilauea Iki Trail which follows along the rim of the caldera for 2 miles.

The descends 400 ft into it

A 2 mile walk across the steaming caldera and back up to the rim.

A little side trip takes us to the Thurston Lava Tube.

We drive 18 miles down to the Ocean for lunch witha view.

Next we hike up to Pu'u Huluhulu, a dormant Cinder Cone. This area had the most intersting lava formations and fissures!

Mar 6 - Green Sands Beach
This trip starts near the south point of the Island. It is 4X4 accessable, so we got passed by lots of rental Jeeps. This is an easy seashore walk to a beach with a high concentration of Olivine, a green volcanic mineral. On the way some of the truck tracks make the landscape interesting.

We hiked a dozen other trails and explored a lot of the beaches along the Kona Coast. I really wanted to get to the top of Mauna Kea, but the road was closed because of snow!

Looks like you two had a great trip! Looks like a wonderful place to escape the wet coast winter. (Even with the snow closures)

This was an excellent trip and Stu is a wonderful tour guide. My favourites were Captain Cook Trail, Kilauea Iki Trail in Volcanoes National Park, Green Sands Beach, South Point, Hawaii Botanical Garden, Pololu Beach, it was all good.

Here's some of my pictures on FB:

Great to see you two enjoying yourselves in the tropics. amazing to see the lava flow first hand in its creation stages. I have a lot of basalt all around me that is 3,000 to 10,000 years old. It's interesting to see it form, first hand before all the erosion and the effect of the ages. thanks for the great pictures. When I eventually go to Hawaii, unfortunately it will not have any hiking in it. My wife has made it clear that we will be taking hula lessons, and doing the Brady Bunch tourist thing, hehe.
cheers! jerry

One of my favorite places in the world. I'm heading there in a week for my fifth visit to the big island. Thanks for the inspiration!

Looks awesome. Headed there in a week. Have a day or two free and was looking to do a hike.
South Point was on the list, and maybe a couple more have been added.

Thanks
