If any of you have not read Touching the Void, it is without question the most incredible story of 'big mountain' survival ever written.
I just caught the last few minutes of an interview with author Joe Simpson, on KOMO.TV's Northwest Afternoon. He is appearing at REI in Seattle tonight. And, although I didn't get much detail, it appears that the story has finally been made into a movie. They mentioned one Seattle theatre which is showing the film, and I'm curious whether it will be in wide release, or part of a mountain film festival

| I second that. Very incredible true story. Not to mention very well written. It was gripping pretty much the whole way through. |

Thanks for mentioning that it is indeed a true story. It's actually been some time since I've read it. Well worth picking up again.

phenomenal story. what amazes me most is that Joe Simpson and Simon Yates have remained friends !
If you liked Touching the Void, then by all means pick up Joe's other books - they are all well-written, and tell a gripping story (his short stories rock as well)

Quite funny for this thread to be here. Just saw him on David Letterman of all places and was going to post a new thread asking if the book is worth picking up. Obviously it is.
I truely hope the movie will make it to cinema's in the lower mainland. |

I took the family to the movie last Saturday at the 5th Ave Cinemas. In a word: wow! An amazing documentary with extensive interviews with Simpson, Yates and ... that funny guy who came along and hung around base camp. Great re-enactments of the climb and Joe's epic descent. The movie does a great job of capturing a story that even Joe worried would not translate well to the screen (as discussed in his latest book The Beckoning Silence)

Went to see "Touching the void" at 5th Avenue last nite and I can't recommend it enough, even if you are not into climbing or hiking it is still a great story about the human spirit and the will to survive against all the odds. Oh yeh and it's British so there's another reason to go see it.(:D) |

Just got the book in the mail today. Couldn't find it anywhere locally.

Saw the movie last night and I'm still trying to mull it all over. The scenery was awesome, the climbing was great, the story left me with a sick feeling in my stomach in empathy for what was happening. I liked it and it's definitely worth going to see.

The book is much better than the movie. That being said, the movie is worth the price of admission for the scenery alone.

Rented it yesterday... B and I were thrilled, we didn't move from our seats during the show. Excellent movie, what a beautiful story about men and spirit...it makes you think about your goals and the way you look at life. Joe Simpson, is the new heroe with his strenght and determination and his unquestionable capacity of forgiveness. The CD had extra features like the return to Siula Grande (sp?) and the making off, we watched the whole thing!! I have to admit, it made cry at the end...yeah, I know, I allways cry Anyway, very touching movie! |

| Hey Paula, sounds like you'd like the book too. I can lend it to you next time we meet up on a hike!! It's the sort of book you can't put down, at first I was thrown by some of the technical mountaineering terminology, then I realized that part doesn't matter cause in essence it's a story of the humam spirit, not mountaineering. I'm now inspired to rent the movie too, thanks for your review! And btw, the other Joe Simpson books are good too - I just finished "Dark Shadows Falling". |
