What is the winter parking situation hwy 11 from the park boundary to Nordegg? We're looking to go to Allstones lake to camp on the week-end, and I'd like to know if it's possible to park overnight without impeding the snow removal operations.
The backroads mapbook shows parking at windy point, the waste transfer site and Cline river. Are these usable in winter? Are there other pullouts along this road?
Thanks, Benoit |

| There are many many places to pull off the David Thompson. That area gets very little snow and what it does get usually blows away. I've used the pullouts in winter many times over the years and never had a problem |

It's nice to hear exactly what you wanted to hear! Thanks Dieter!

| What Dieter says is true, however just seen on the weather report that Nordegg got 35-40 cm. of fresh with this last storm. The roads will be plowed, just not sure how fast they are at getting the pullouts done. Have fun. |

FYI, the icefields parkway has been closed for a couple of days. If you're coming from the west, B.C. that would make for a long detour unless it opens up soon.
I'm out the door in a few mins heading out to Jasper. As of now the Maligne Lake road is closed due to avalanche hazard and south to the Saskatchewan River Crossing and on to Lake Louise is closed.
I am soooo hoping that the roads open up soon as I had planned on going back through Nordegg for photos.
As for parking, the snow never lasts for very long in the David Thomson corridor. It either melts or gets blown away. There are always vehicles parked on the side of road or by Preachers Point. |

You might find this link useful for pullouts if you aren't familiar with the area. Best pullouts are probably Preacher's point, Windy point.

You should contact Shunda Creek hostel to check on highway conditions before you head out. 403-721-2140 |

There is a parking lot on at the Allstones Lake trailhead on the lake side of the highway. Might not be plowed though, and only signed coming from the west if I remember right.
Huge dump of snow in Nordegg on Tuesday. I imagine you'll be postholing if going to Allstones. |

lastly, if one was to drive from Edmonton to this area of the highway and wanted to camp late Friday night, where would a good place to pull over be? IS there anything decent (free ideally) between Nordegg and Sask crossing? we're used to camping in pullouts in BC but I don't know if that goes around here. Thanks again!

| Lots of potential. Random camping is allowed anywhere outside of the Kootenay Plains Ecological Reserve. Two places where you can get off the highway are Landslide Lake trail parking lot 20k east of Sask Crossing would be a good spot. Preachers Point is a free camping area but can get windy. |
