Not sure if I'm in the right section here for my questions but here goes anyway. I'm planning a New Years get together for 10 of us at Hemlock Resort. I know it's a long way's off yet but this kind of planning for New Years needs to be delt (booked) with long in advance. Anyway's, what I'm looking for is a cabin with an outdoor hot tub and fireplace in the resort or very close to it. Anyone have any connections to such a cabin for 10 oldies? Also, is there any good snowshoeing and groomed cross-country there other then Pretty Peak back down the road for the shoeing? The Hemlock site doesn't seem to be very helpful so here I am.

Guess road access is always good for the paying customer's.

Maybe somebody out there has done something similar there before and would be willing to share some info.

Thanks in advance

The after 3pm skiing is pretty wonderful and inexpensive at $8 for your lift ticket. I haven't spent much time snowshoing at the resort but seeing as they do rent snowshoes there it would seem they dont have a problem with snowshoers tooling around the ridgeline.

I believe that you have to pay to use the resorts snowshoe trails and the price includes a guide as you can't use the trails without one.

Geez you're right Nicki. That sucks much but I guess not being parkland and with a private operation ....

Ah well, hey the *$5 Fridays and Ladies ski free Thurs are just about enough for me to forgive them!

There are 2 chalet rental companies at Hemlock. Mountain Accomodations doesn't have any rentals with hot tubs. Snowflake Resort has quite a few, viewable on their web site. They also have lots of info on snowshoeing in the area.
Hemlock Valley is a box canyon between 3 mountains. Hemlock Resort occupies the middle one, Mount Downing. The two on either side, Mount Keenan and Mount Klaudt, are free to snowshoe on. Mount Klaudt is used by lots of snowshoers and the local ATV club built a trail last year that goes from the top down to Weaver Lake and further to Harrison Lake .

Clearing up a few other misconceptions...
Hemlock offers a "$5 Friday". A lift ticket after 3:30 pm on Fridays is only $5. Any other day after 3:30 it is $22.32.
To snowshoe on their groomed trails is $9.82. You only need a guide to use the alpine trails, because you are in active alpine skiing zones. To snowshoe outside of their lease zone is free, crown land.

How is the snowshoeing there? Big rolling areas with lots of little features for fun, or a hellish wasteland of avy-prone cliffs with extra-loud sledders tossing beer cans at you?

Neither, I guess, and both. On Mount Klaudt there is a main road up thru the trees, then it flattens out and opens up.
The trail is used by everyone; hikers, snowshoers, skiers, sleds , quads and dirtbikers in summer, and occasionally horses. Up top, everyone goes their seperate ways. There are avi chutes to ski and fields to play in. Due to low usage, conflicts are rare.

Hey Justa,

For future reference where does the road begin for the trek to Mt. Klaudt. Keeping in mind I haven't been at the resort for many, many years. How far and high does this route take one to btw? Any idea?

A picture is worth a thousand words. It is very clear on Google Earth; better than I can describe. It starts off the main cross-country trail halfway between the lodge and the works yard. You can see the road from the village. The elevation gain is the same as the resort.

Someone posted a couple of trip reports about Mount Klaudt a while back. I believe they were snowshoeing on New Year's.

Did some investigating into chalet's and cabins listed above by Justa plus another company and it seem's they all request a minimum of a four night stay including the evening of New Years Eve night. With New Years day 2013 falling on the Tuesday seem's these companies are trying to cash in by making it a four day weekend minimum. To rich for our blood. We were hoping for a single Monday night New Years there. Then beating it Tuesday after exploring. Perhaps someone know's of a possible hidden gem (cabin) somewhere close by that's not affiliated with the major player's near the resort area
