I headed up to the Chief on Sunday for more of a hike than a snowshoe as I am wishing for Summer. I parked at the Chief parking lot as opposed to the Shannon Falls parking lot that I usually park at. I ran into a gentleman at the trailhead as he was leaving but then had the trail to myself. It did not take long on the trail until the ice appeared on the trail. I held out as long as possible but put my micro spikes on at around the 1.5km mark as it was slippery as hell. I was a little spooked at the junction for first or second peak as I heard lots of crashing around in the trees near First Peak. Being on the trail you are sheltered from the wind though and it turned out to be high winds bashing around the trees. Not a bear or rabid squirrel or something of the sort that I expected haha. Once out in the open nearing the peak I realized just how windy it was and just how cold it made it! The whole peak is a sheet of ice with an inch or two of new snow on top. Not great for traction for sure! The Chains are frozen to the mountain so you had to make your own way up without them. Once on the peak I realized just how strong the wind was blowing! It really pushed you around if you did not brace for the huge gusts. Sitting and kneeling I took some photos and had a quick lunch after putting on every layer I had packed! On the peak I met the second person of the day but he only stayed for 5 min and then it was just me again. After soaking up the sun for a bit longer I packed up and headed back down the trail. On the way down I met 14 people but it was pretty dead for a day on the Chief. If the wind was not so strong I would have done all three peaks but hiking back down to the trees the wind was at my back and it was strong enough to launch you forward a few steps when it hit you and that is a creepy feeling!

I thought it turned out pretty well too. But as fast as the wind was blowing at the chief those clouds almost did not move other than to thicken up.

That's a different Chief TR; never seen it in the snow before. Sounds a little treacherous.

Me too. If there were no clouds in the pic it would not really be a true representation...

With all that ice, wonder how close you dare get to the part of the peak sliding down towards the Howe Sound. Beautiful shots of Garibaldi as others have noted.

Not that close is the answer. The footprints that went out to the edge in the one photo must have been from the guy before me
