I decided that I did not want to go play in the snow and realized that I had never done any exploring out at Pacific Spirit Regional Park. I parked at the Trail 7 entrance to Wreck Beach and headed down the stairs. I walked along the trail/beach stopping along the way to poke around stopping for longer at the main beach. I have to say this is really the time of year to explore the beach for sure!!! I continued on until getting to Tower Beach where I poked around some more. Never seeing or hearing about this place I had to see what was there. Once done I headed on and made my way to Spanish Banks. Once at Spanish Banks the rain started in earnest with lots of wind and horizontal rain I decided to make my way into the park again and into the woods. I kept to the woods as much as possible but got caught on the wrong side of a golf course and had to do some road walking. Once back in the woods I made my way down to Marine Drive and then back onto Old Marine Drive. It was a great day walking even if I was soaked from head to toe and pretty cold. I only took photos on the beach as by the time I hit the forest I had lost interest in taking photos.
I recommend this 18km loop!

Here is a neat article on the military history at UBC that talks a bit about the gun placements and searchlight towers on the beach. http://ubyssey.ca/features/fortess-ubc432-guarding-the-city/
Where is your second picture taken, the one with the white and black painted brick? I have spent quite a bit of time around there and never seen it. |

Ah History.
I remember walking behind that tower in the 70's. and the cliff was right behind it close. than over five years the cliffs suffered about 5 to 6 feet of retreat. Its been a long time, worthwhile and go check it out firsthand.

Ah history.
I remember working on Triumf experiments in the 1970s as an undergraduate technician. As the absolute lowest member of the team I got the graveyard shift (midnight - 8:00am). My job was to change tapes, make notes, and watch various instuments. But the huge upside was I could could sleep all day on Wreck Beach. The physics experiments lasted all summer so I had an excellent tan.
I don't think physics students have those opportunities anymore.

The second photo is an access point for a storm system I think. It is just east of the second tower I think on the trail. Its not very big maybe 3 feet tall most. I will have to read up on the towers though as I am very interested in that kind of history! |
