This is a subject I find higly disturbing. Ivory demand fuels the slaughter of these beautiful animals, and is unbelievable what length poachers go to....
Last year a record 450 rhinos were poached in South Africa, a crushing blow for a country home to more than 70 percent of the animal's global population.
The dramatic spike in rhino killings -- up from 13 in 2007 -- feeds the Asian traditional medicine market, despite scientific evidence that the horns have no medicinal value. They are made of the same substance as human fingernails.
The increase is driven by highly organised syndicates who deploy shooters with night-vision goggles, high-powered rifles and sometimes even helicopters to make their kills....

Also another one about massacre of 200 elephants: YAOUNDE (Reuters) - Poachers have killed more than 200 elephants in Cameroon in just six weeks, in a "massacre" fuelled by Asian demand for ivory.
A local government official said heavily armed poachers from Chad and Sudan had decimated the elephant population of Bouba Ndjida National Park in Cameroon's far north in a dry season killing spree

This greed is based on such misconceptions, and we loose such valuable indivudals of species of our wildlife, a treasure needed to be preserved for future generations but lost so cheaply.
