As you come off the Sky Chair on the south summit of Strachan, go straight through/over/around the ski area boundary fence. The "sick" north face will be to skier's left. It usually has a fairly large cornice. Drop in anyplace you're comfortable, or continue to the col between the south and north summits. The col is the top of the mellow "far skier's right gully" he refers to.

I would recommend skiing the gully your first time there to get a feel for the terrain and scope out the north face. It also deposits you in a clearing which is the lowest you want to go. As shown on his map, head south-west from the clearing to start the traverse back to the ski area. Part of the traverse follows the Howe Sound Crest Trail, which is marked in some fashion.

The tree skiing on the west side of Hollyburn Mountain (accessed from the cross country area) is also good value when there is sufficient snow.

Note that the entire NW can go pretty big in bad avi conditions. As well, when the sun hits it on a late afternoon in spring, small isothermic point releases can turn big very quickly and the entire NW face is basically one big funnel. I've kicked off more than one significant slide in there over the years.

Just be careful not to go down too far past the HSCT, least you become stuck and unable to get yourself out...

I noticed this weekend that Google Maps' satellite imagery of Strachan and Hollyburn clearly show ski tracks in the backcountry areas.

What i'd like to know is how people are getting up into the hollyburn mountain area from near the downhill parking lot when the snow is so high? I see the tracks up there but how do u get up past the road?

Grimgrak, there are a few ways, in winter its pretty simple terrain so generally heading uphill and avoiding steeper sections will get you to the top. The common route when there is enough snowpack is to depart from the overnight parking lot, contouring up southwest slopes to the peak of Hollyburn (alternative following the powerlines then onto a marked trail from the cross country parking lots).

When the ski area is closed you could follow the Collins groomer on cypress, turn right into the forested plateau when collins makes a turn to the lookers left.
