This isn't really a trip so I figured it belonged in the "Other" category of activities.

We visited Tofino and Ucluelet over the holidays to do some storm watching.

Part way through the first day, the rains started and a storm moved in.

The next morning the winds were howling and the seas were alive but the skies were mixed sun and cloud (with one short hail/rain storm that caught us off guard.) We came across a dead seal on the beach. Perhaps it got banged up on the rocks? Maybe it was some other cause?

There was plenty of sea foam and one big foam wave put me up to my knees in the stuff.

The next morning, I caught a nice pre-sunrise from Comox.

Thanks all.

Cambium: We didn't see anything that we could clearly identify as being from Japan. I had seen in the news that the wreckage was washing up earlier than expected so I was looking closely.

"Bottles, cans and lumber from the tsunami that devastated Japan in March began washing up on British Columbia shores this week, more than a year earlier than oceanographers had initially predicted."

Nice report and beautiful photos, I hope to get out to Tofino someday.
Could that be Japanese shaving cream perhaps? Kidding aside, I've heard multiple arguments that the Japanese junk found is not from the Tsunami but likely a fishing boat. Who knows, nobody can say for sure at this point.

Today I opened my newest N.G. and the experts state that the majority of debris will show up in 2014, and become part of the pacific ocean garbage patch by 2016. They used 15,000 scientific wave current buoys to predict the flow.
A few wind driven items may show up by 2012, including tires t.v.s and cars.
Feet encased in shoes are also on the list.

Love seeing these dendritic drainage patterns, so delicate.

A Little Mermaid who died of a broken heart. Or noxious decaying algal blooms.

The sea foam was at South Beach (a short walk from Wickaninnish Beach.) I got a mouthful so I can assure you it was genuine sea foam and not shaving foam. It was a fairly local effect, building up in one corner of the bay. In other places, there was just the normal amount.

It will be interesting when the Japanese wreckage washes ashore. I think it will be very novel and interesting for about one month and then it may be recognized as an eye sore, potential hazard for beachcombers (rusty nails, etc.) and environmental issue. I guess it all depends on the volume of material and how spread out it is.
