Quick report of conditions by Wilcox Pass as of Friday Nov. 11:
We started out at the Wilcox Creek campground. The snow was fairly thin at the start of the trail but gradually gets deeper as you go up. When you hit the first major tree clearing, there is about 40cm of snow on the trail and snowshoes are recommended beyond this section. We had a group of 5 people that packed the trail down all the way to the top of the pass but there has been lots of new snow lately and this will most likely be covered again in fresh snow.
The snow near the top of the pass is thinner primarily due to the wind blowing much of it away on the small ridges but there are significant snow drifts of up to 1 metre at the pass. When we were on the pass, we had fairly poor visibility and could not see the Athabasca Glacier but it was an interesting trip nonetheless. We felt a bit like Victorian explorers (see photos). Both on the way up and down, we also saw also quite a few Bighorn sheep on the ridge just above Wilcox Creek.
