I was just a bit lake to get my last hike of the season in.
My goal was Mt. Severide on the North side of Monashee lake.

Watching the weather and rain all week I knew that I'd get wet but I was hoping for the best.
Turns out there was a lot of cloud to be seen and little else.
The rain turned to snow at around 1800m and when I got to Monashee Lake I could barely see across the little lake.
Mt Severide was out as route finding would be hopeless and the South side is a lot of cliffs.
I figured I'd head up the short sunny peak instead but the fog turned me around in circles and my GPS put me half way up the pinacles.
Since I wasn't into turning around in circles in the clouds I headed back home.
It was fun to get good and wet and say bye to the mountains till next summer.

Thats a nice area, despite the clouds. Winter is just around the corner! Hardly a reason to stay out of the mountains!

Nice shots of the tree frosted with snow, and your self potrait. I can see your joy to herald the end of one season and the beginning of another. Had a friend who recommended the Monashees, but never did get around to hiking up in those parts.

Thanks for the encoragement to keep going despite the snow. I've always been weary of avalanches, give me some tips on how to proceed in the snow.

If it is any consolation (which it won't be) here is a view of Mount Severide from an obscure summit I bushwhacked to the top of two weeks earlier. Severide can be seen just left of picture.

I think I'll add Severide to my itinerary for next year's alpine hiking season. Did you have any idea of a route to take up Severide or were you just going to go and see?

(And now that I've figured out how to add photos to ClubTread, maybe I shold add more.)

Hey Richard
I was aiming at going up from the south and heading east under the bowl to the SE ridge.
I saw some pictures on bivouac.com.
I was at Twin lakes the other week and hiked along the ridge where the Mark Berger traverse is and the NW ridge is an easy scramble but that would be a longer day.
If you ever need anyone to hike with let me know.

I once thought when the snow falls that I had to stop hiking, but 5 years ago I discovered winter hiking and I hope you do too. If you're not sure where to start, buy some 6 point instep crampons for those icy parts of the trail and some hiking poles. Winter hiking is so much fun...unless ofcourse you don't pack extra clothes.

Lovely report mwakoja.

Hi Rich,

In August, I also did a trip to Twin Lakes with the group I hike with. Some of use made it a short way along the Mark Berger Traverse. Unfortunately, not everyone in the group has the same sense of purpose that I set out with, and I could see that it would be possible to make it a lot further. Whether I'd be able to make it from the trailhead to Severide and back in a day, though, I'm not sure.

Anyway, I certainly will let you know if I in need of someone to hike with. I have a couple of things coming up with the above-mentioned group in the next month, namely Terrace Mountain and Okanagan Mountain Park. Not quite like the Pinnacles, but if it is of interest, I can give you the details.

Likewise, if you are planning a trip, let me know. I may be interested.
