Wow - what a beautiful place. This has been on my to see list for quite some time. We decided to take an impromtu trip and bounce around between the Olympics and hte North Cascades. Due to late season snow and my wife not wanting to do a lot of backpacking, we decided to car camp and do a few day hikes in ONP. We were told that the hurricane ridge area was a must see, by one of my wifes coworkers. This should have prompted red flags but we went anyhow. There was a nice view and we hiked klahaane ridge, however it seemed like we were going away from where we should be - in the snow capped mountains across the way. We car camped at the bottom of the mountain - nice and close to port townsend which had some great places to eat and fantastic beer. Next we went to hoh and hiked a bit on th hoh trail. It would be fantastic to hike from the rainforest into the high country towards blue glacier and maybe into sol duc area....but we didnt. The rainforest was pretty neat though - next time bring fly rod. Even though our visit there was a bit lackluster hiking wise, I now know what areas would be nice to backpack (7 lakes basin etc). Next we went to N Cascades and did Cascade Pass/Sahale - great area! I would really like to explore this place more, it was splendid. Last I did a day hike near mount baker - the highline divide I think it was called. Started out in the clouds, dark and gloomy. Made it up to the ridge and popped out of the clouds - surreal mountain top islands in a sea of clouds, mt shuksan etc. I really got lucky and had great views for about 1.5 hours on the ridge. Then the clouds rose and I hiked back down in clouds. |
