Has anyone been to Mt Baker to snowshoe? Do you have any advice on best locations? Will possibly be going there this weekend with my 7 yr old son and others.

I love snowshoeing up in the backcountry beyond the ski hill at Mt. Baker however I would never take my kids up there. Most of it involves a lot climbing in relatively risky terrain. Also the weather can come up and change really fast up on those exposed ridgelines.

You might want to consider snowshoeing lower down the mountain to White Salmon Creek in the Salmon Ridge Sno-Park if you are planning on snowshoeing with young ones.

Hiker Boy, I see Coat Pass and White Salmon Creek in my little book.....maybe we'll try one of those. Have you done Coat Pass?

Oh yeah, you also have to watch out for this fiesty mocha drinking, hot sauce shooting, womanizing, big @ss knife carrying Cajun guy who dwells somewhere around there!

calixtomoon, I haven't done that White Salmon area but will be doing it in two weeks from now. You must be reading the same Snowshoe Routes - Washington by Nelson that I use as well?

I have that book also, as well as Cross-Country Ski Tours Washington's North Cascades.

It lists the White Salmon Creek trail as having no avalanche potential.

Tundra, Marmot, you agree?

Yep, that's the book......Time to get out and start utilizing the darn thing that's been in my bookcase for a nearly a year..........

Okay, I'm kind of scared of that big @ss knife guy. Am I going to have to employ my son as a taekwondo weapon of self-defense???

Nah, he's harmless. His most dissabling weapon is his southern charm for which most women up here have no immunity!

Well, his charm may work on the wimmin-folk. But he wins the guys' trust through beer and his cajun cookin. Just don't try to take the beer from him unless he offers...then you might have a problem.

Trailflower, HB and I haven't done White Salmon area yet. We are looking at it becuase all accounts we can find list it as a low to no risk area. That and it's a change from Artist's Point. Haven't checked out the XC Ski Tours in the N. Cascades book yet...may have to. Have the 100 best XC Ski Trails in WA checked out from the library now, along with the second edition of Snowshoe Routes, WA. I think there are a few more N. Cascades Routes in the second ed. Need to verify it tho.

i guess i am not typical "wimmin folk"
it was the cooking that put Tundra on my keepers list! Hehe...

I agree with HB...taking kids up into the mt baker backcountry area in winter is not a good idea.

Definatly enough snow lower down to have lots of fun. Only thing to be careful of that I can see for the salmon creek area is to not go farther than you have the umph for...lots of meadow wandering and a bit of forest according to the ranger station fella for the area. Oh and to keep the kids away from the edge of the creek...snow can make things look stable when there not..and that would be a very cold plunge!

Happy snowplay,
Otter (Marmot's other half)

I was going to mention you too Tundra but you don't show your face around that much - unless you're ommitted from the fine list of Baker Boys.

We didn't get out snowshoeing at Baker, and I see from the Skagit pics that Calixtomoon didn't either. Raining, 34F, and soft snow at the ski hill. Next time....

HB, if you do get to White Salmon Creek in 2 weeks, please post a trip report. We're looking for places to take the kids (and us too).
