Encouraging people to sign up for next year! TR will be posted tomorrow. Tonight is about celebration.

Canuck Place Adventure Challenge 2011.

This is the house.

This is a kid in the house:

This is a kid in the house and the stuff that happens there:

This is the house that has been crafted for kids; and the stuff that happens there is all about "embracing life."

I'd first worked the Adventure Challenge as a volunteer back in 2009. Ever since that day it had been my intention to return again as a participant. This year I was determined to make that happen.

When I shared my plans with Bishop:

She was immediately interested in joining me so my plans to race as a single soon changed to racing as Team 10,000 Killa Joules and I'm glad it did.

There have been quite a few hours spent on bikes, foot and kayak to prepare and there have been fundraising efforts and all has been part of an enjoyable journey.

But of course, the focus of this TR will be the race itself.

We arrived at gear check and registration at the prerequiste time and it just so happened that we were presented with "lucky number seven" and "crazy eight" as racer numbers. How unbelievably perfect!

The race was stagged into two heats. We were set to take off in the 10:30 heat, this allowed us to spectate the 9:30 kayak start. And what a start it was! Mass confusion reigned as paddlers went about in all sorts of directions with some of the less experienced paddlers ramming into eachother in an attempt to get.....? well nobody seemed to really know where they were going. More perfect.

After that heat had returned, we geared up in our Kayak and got ready for our big start. Fortunately by this time everyone now knew the route.

The all important warm up.

And the start.

And the finish.

Next it was time to sprint to the transition area and change/grab gear and bikes:

Janna performs some ultra-secret, sacred, adventure racing ritual.

and off we went again!

Hard to compete with Janna's Superdave inspired helmet design so I did the best I could by going ultra-dork and doubling/tripling up my headwear. The route was quite plesant with one wonderful hill which was great fun riding down!

Once we had returned to transition we were offered popcorn!

Just what we needed to help us keep focused for the hike ahead.

We were presented with other motivational tidbits along the way.

And there were some confusing signs.

(((up there???)))

and some Team Sheen foolery. Tiger Blood!

and Team Joules rounding into the homestretch. (We had to make it look good for the camera.)

and post race, all cleaned up wearing our Swag

The winners of todays event... Everyone who participated in a really fantastic day that raised $280,000 for Canuck Place Children's Hospice.

This is an annual event and one that really any able bodied individual can do. If you decide you'd like to give it a try next year, give me a shout.

Congrats! I did the inaugural Storm the Shore event. It looks like the route is similar (but no longer finishes at the LSCR). Cool.

ps. I fixed your white balance.

Thanks Guntis, nice choice of photo upon which to provide that correction!

And below; the photo of my hero; the little person who has touched and inspired us both to take part in the CPAC.
