So I'm being sent to the Peg next week for work, and I expect sitting in a hotel room for 4 nights will drive me batty...

Anyone have any suggestions for where to go to get out a bit? I'm not totally sure I'll have a vehicle, and I'll be in the office during the day, so nearby and short (enough for an evening hike) would be awesome. I'm poking around online to see what I can find, but recommendations would be so welcome 8)

Thanks!

Oh the peg...

You'll definitely find this online, but The Forks is actually pretty nice and worth spending some time exploring. I'm not sure about actual hikes though - I've had a knack for only going there when it's -80 outside, or at least that's what it felt like!

Assiniboine park
The forks
Go check out Osborne village in an evening
Go to Corydon ave for a nice Italian dinner
go for ice cream - I forget the name of the place but ask any Pegger and they will point you there (something about a bridge)
I hear they've done a lot with the waterfront so that would also be nice to check out

For any reasonable hikes you'd have to leave the city, so the above are urbaneering suggestions only ;)

...and bring some industrial-strength DEET!

The Trappist Monastery is supposedly a nice site, but I don't know any of the particulars. I lived just south of Winnipeg from '61 to '69 and returned for a visit in '80 when I was 21 (do the math)...

Might check out renting a bike too if you're into cycling. http://winnipeg.ca/publicworks/MajorProjects/ActiveTransportation/maps-and-routes.stm

Oooh, thanks for the suggestions! I like the bike rental idea-and the Trappist Monastery ruins sound really cool (I like old things and ruins are right up there on the list)...

Urbaneering is likely all I'll have time for, especially being unfamiliar with the area. And it sounds like ice cream will be in order, if the weather is anything like yesterday-apparently 38 degrees or something stupid, not a temperature I'm used to living in the Lower Mainland. Almost too hot for bugs lol, but I'm gonna buy the DEET and the net ;)

I'll see if there's a work colleague out there with a vehicle who might be up for and know of a good quick evening hike-ya never know 8) thanks!

Apparently the bugs are fine this year.
That monastery is very cool, I'd forgotten about it. Once some friends and I paddled our canoes to it, but I forget how the logistics worked.

Actually, thinking about canoeing, wpg is in between two rivers, and I remember it being a short and fun day trip to paddle the Assiniboine river down to the forks. There is actually a lot of urban paddling that can be done in that city.

Oooh, Blackfly, that is a stellar idea-I have a partner (staying home) who just might be a tad jealous if I manage to get some paddling in, as we keep meaning to do just that-perfect opportunity to "git 'er done" and give him some motivation to join me in a little boat trip when I get back! ;) hehehe...a cunning plan.

For ice cream go the BDI (Bridge Drive In). There will be a huge line but it's worth it.

If there's a baseball game on you could check that out. It's a nice little stadium right downtown.

If you have a car Birds Hill Park is fairly close to downtown, maybe 35 minutes? It's a nice spot to spend a few hours.

Winnipeg, eh?

I'd hike to the airport and leave.

Hike over to the Winnipeg Arena Jets arena just to check it out? I have a vibe the Jets will do better than the Canucks next season.

unless things change in the next couple of weeks you won't have to worry about the mossies....My sister thinks they must have all drowned as they have been able to sit out in the evening and she lives on the la Salle river outside of the city.
Bears on Broadway was really nice but I understand they have been relocated to all over the city now. I think there maybe still a few on Broadway but not the walk it was a few years ago.

LaSalle River, just south of the city down Waverley St, is where the monastary is, more-or-less, and there's a nice park on the river out that way, called La Barriere. That and Bird's Hill (in the opposite direction) are the best nearby parks. Or on the west side there is Beaudry. Any one of those parks would give a similar prairie/river experience.

In the city there is Assiniboine and other big parks in about every section of the city. The Peg has great parks. If you go for ice cream at the BDI, there's Churchill Park nearby - same kinda experience, walking along the river.

For an outdoorsy/enviro kind of experience you could try the Ft. Whyte Centre, in the southwest.

Downtown, the Forks and baseball are great ideas. And of course if you can get your hands on a canoe, that would be awesome.

Pat.
