Yup,people in our N-Van neighbourhood are sliding and spinning along. This morning a young guy in a canary yellow CRX spent an hour trying to go three uphill blocks.I ended up telling him to go three blocks down to Third St,and to go up Lonsdale from there. No way was he doing that, though! When I returned from walking my dog,he was still there, cursing in two different languages

Hilarious Hiker! Funny how soon the Christmas cheer and good will towards all men is gone.

Todd, you might want to be careful how you word your topic lines - New Years Baby?? I thought you were making a surprise annoucement

I had an excellent New Years - got to hang out with my daughters and their guys. That hasn't happened for a few years as they usually have other New Year's Eve plans that don't include old mom. They kept me up until 5:00 this morning playing games when we all crashed at that point. I was up at 10:45 and since the rest of the house was still sound asleep I went for a brisk New Year's Day walk. It was definitely cold with lots of black ice around. Great way to wake up and kick off the New Year.

DreadedWonder, Tash and I spent New Years up at the Elfin Shelter firing off bear bangers and flares with about three dozen other poeple. A couple of other people had some big maritime flares that were very impressive - they shot about 80 metres high and lasted for atleast 30 seconds. We hooked up with six telemarkers from the UBC Varsity Outdoor Club (VOC) http://www.ubc-voc.com/
They spent Mon-Wed nights at the shelter and we three joined them Tue & Wed nights.

Jared_Dalgren from CT and his big crew (7 or 8) snowshoed up towing a sled laiden with a portable propane BBQ & cooler. They seemed to really enjoy their beer and burgers after all that hard work.

There were a a lot of smaller groups of AT and telemark skiers and snowshoers. All the bunks were occupied in the shelter although about a third of the doubles were occupied by singles (especially by tall guys like Dread). I used ear plugs to dim out the constant din of all the snoring. Quite a few of the skiers stayed outside in their tents (much nicer when the shelter is brimming to capacity).

Dread and I broke trail in a fairly round-about loop to the Gargoyles, but couldn't see them due to visibilty. The powder was abundant. We dug out a snow cave, but I got too ambitious when I tried to expand it from two person capacity to four person. We collapsed it and one of the tenters snagged the pit.

The snow level at the shelter is currently above the main door as there are three or four steps that lead down to the main door. Here's a pic I gleaned from the net of a ski trip in May 1999. The snow level at the time was such that the entrance to the shelter was dug down to the fire escape on the loft (sleeping area) level. I pretty much expect it will be like that this coming spring too.

Thanks for the update Bonk. We did New Years there *many* years ago. We skied up as a party of three, one guy came up by himself and there was another pary of 4, making 8 altogether.

We all had a flask or wineskin and shared munchies. No bear-bangers or flares and no bbq. Quite quiet compared to these days.

Fairly round about? Not only did we not hit our tracks again until about 100m from the shelter, but we probably travelled 5km when it could have been about 2km in a straight line. I'm not complaining of course, it was a good day trip through the woods, though next time trying a different route would be advisable.

All in all a good trip though, and quite a way to bring in the new year. I'm really wanting to head back there and do some more exploring now, good thing there's still plenty of winter left.

my 9 yr old, little quirkygirl and i set out to elfin lakes for new year's eve as well, but only made it as far as red heather meadows. met another ct-er with 2 friends along the way, and it was great fun!

we stayed in the toasty warm shelter and there was an amazing amount of traffic that night--there were even 4 skiers who stopped in at 11:30 p.m. who roasted chestnuts (mmmmmmm, gooood...) and rang in the new year and then headed out again.

here's little quirkygirl on the trail

glad to finally be at the red heather meadows shelter

a couple of shots of diamond head on the morn of the new year

here's us on the way back down

and views of the tantalus range

all in all, it was a spectacular trip. sounds like the elfin lakes cabin was at max capacity, and though i'm sorry we didn't get to join in your festivities, we had an awesome time all the same.

My New Years was quiet too, although I did manage to spend New Years in another province. Even if that province was Ontario . Although imagine my surprise when I came back to BC and found out that were more snow here than back in ON! Like what's up with that????

Anyway, glad to hear/read that everyone in CT land had a good holiday! Cheers,
