Looking for suggestions from the hiking community...
My friend and I will partake in our third annual 'manventure' this coming weekend and I am looking for suggestions now that my first choice appears to be snowed in (Iceline trail loop). Last year we summited the Golden Hinde (loop route) and the year before, the WCT. This time around we have less time. We plan to leave from Calgary Friday afternoon, and return monday evening. Prefer to stay within a few hours drive of Calgary. I was thinking to camp at trail head Friday night for hiking a full day Saturday, full day Sunday and half-day Monday then drive back. So, I'm thinking about 30km would be a good distance, depending on terrain.
Preferences: 1) Loop trails preferred. 2) Out of the trees, up on ridges and more exposed areas (better views and wind tends to keep mosquitos away somewhat) for a good part of the hike. 3) < 3 hour drive from Calgary, preferably within 2. 4) Not overly crowded trails. 5) Scrambling is good, but no ropes or climbing gear (Golden Hinde was a pretty sketchy).
Was thinking Tamarack, the only long trail in Waterton but trail report says poor, and mostly trees anyway. Jasper too far. Out of ideas, our annual manventure needs your help! |

Most places *still* seem to be snowed in within a few hours of Calgary, at least from what I've managed to gather from trail reports, etc.
Your best bet might be the Skoki region (across the highway from Lake Louise), which is mostly snow free now and about 3 hours from Calgary. It's quite scenic and a good portion of the hike is in meadows so maybe you'll avoid mosquitoes. On Sat. head to Merlin Meadows, on Sunday hike through Jonas Pass, detour to Red Deer Lakes, then camp at Baker Lake, and then on Monday head out.
Anything else I can think of is still snowed in or up in Jasper. Good luck! |

| I should add that you will have company in the area for sure, but there are scrambles in the area if you`re ambitious and energetic (see Alan Kane`s Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies). |

| Thought I'd post an update. The hike was amazing - we had a great time. Didn't get rained on, and had mostly sun on the last day, Mon. July 11th, when we summited Fossil Mtn. Glissade down was great fun, what a beautiful place. Thanks again. |
