This week's early season leg stretcher involved a trip to the Stawamus Squaw (now called Shlanay or something along those lines) and then a return up over the North summit of the Chief via the North ridge approach.
Started from the Shannon Falls parking lot for an easier start & then joined the crowds after crossing Olesen Creek. Crowds thinned considerably when we turned off for the 3rd peak trail and became non-existent when we took the 1st Shlanay fork. From here the trail drops and then picks up a system of old logging roads (met a couple on dirt bikes down there who came in on the Squamish FSR). It's a pleasant enough hike but a pretty anti-climactic end when you come out on a little bluff with the ruins of an old fire lookout (I assume that's what the structure must have been). About 2 hours to get up here:

Coming back I encountered a side trail that intersects the north side trail to the Chief coming up from Squamish itself. When we got the Olesen-Chief fork I decided we'd extend the trip a bit with a detour up the North side of the chief (challenging route for my dog). There's a couple of neat peek-a-boo views of the town below as you start this route:

Views from the North summit were shared with about 40 folks who had come up the other side. From there we headed back to the car for a total hike time of just over 4 hours. Total elevation gain/descent was approx 1200 meters. |

The Chief trail was an absolute zoo on Sunday. We were VERY happy to leave it for the Upper Shannon Falls trail. Coming back down, the selection of items being carried up included a very large aluminum foil Stanley Cup, a length of rebar, a broom, two very young twins being toted in their parents' arms, and a cat in a backpack. First time I've seen that! |

| I encountered the guy with the rebar and broom on my way down from the North peak of the Chief. My guess is he was doing some route cleaning and some "via ferrata" work (there's a piece or two of rebar placed for steps on the N ridge route) |

That cat doesn't look very happy. Do they let him out up top? Can he not stay home alone?
We encountered a (white) guy in full rap gear with his boombox BOOMING when we were up a month or so back.
I'm not surprised they changed the name. |
