On the May long weekend my girlfriend and I stayed with some friends at French Beach Provincial Park on Vancouver Island. On Monday May 23 after packing up all the camping gear we decided to so some poking around before we had to hit the ferries. I had heard about a Provincial Park called the Sooke Potholes. When we got the Provincial Park parking lot we decided to go further up the road to see what the deal was with the Regional Park beyond. (The provincial park is very small but when the then private land was sold to the land conservancy they turned all that land into a regional park to protect this whole area.) We took a short stroll along the trails to see what was here. The river is amazing! Tones of waterfalls and lots of Potholes (swimming holes) alone this stretch of the river! We will be coming back here to do an extensive hike at a later date.

Once upon a time this place above the potholes was a Nudist Colony . Further way upstream is the long-ago township of Leechtown ; the Galloping Goose trail was once proposed to continue thru there to Shawnigan Lake , but the Greater Victoria Water-shed Dictators put the brakes on that idea. Worth the effort to go up to the Leech town area. Try your hand at some gold-panning. |
