A few more pics of Matier - this time on the 20th. Craig and I both took a day off from our respective jobs. Since Craig hadn't been up Matier yet it seemed a good place to go. It was my tenth ascent but the last time was about 15 years ago. So, it was nice to get reacquainted. I stopped going to the area shortly after the cabin was put in. Still, it's a great place to go. I was surprised at how much the Anniversay Glacier has retreated. Now, it's a pretty steep approach on the left hand side. No one hardly ever went up the right side. Opposite situation today. I don't think I'd want to skin up the left side - way too steep now. Didn't even want to ski it on the way back what with the loose, wet snow at that elevation. Times, they are a-changin'.

Standard approach shot.

Had to boot pack through this rockwall. Never did that before.

Slalok from Matier.

Craig a couple of minutes before summiting.

Downclimbing.

Aussie Couloir on Joffre. Didn't see any tracks.

I didn't mention the avalanches. Some large, loose ones crossed our route. We had to manage the risk very carefully.

BTW, I tried out zinc oxide as sunblock and it works better than sunscreen SPF 60.

Your pictures are getting me pumped to get out and do some of those high mountain peaks. Anyone want to go for one of the Coquihalla peaks within the next one or two weeks?

Paul,

Thanks for the TR. Great day!

A few more pics:

Paul sporting his zinc oxide facial mask. When I looked at him oddly he said "it may not look so good, but it looks a lot better that skin cancer".

Heading up -- just below Keith's Hut

Looking down the summit ridge -- note Linus's dog prints all over the place.

Summit shot (Paul and Linus had already summited and were waiting below).

Summit shots looking towards Joffre and Joffre Laknes.

A look back at where we have been.

Skiing - the top was wind/sun affected, this part was nice corn, the bottom was iso-thermal crap

Looking back .. the end of a fine day!

T2C, Lee there was 3 good reasons why we didn't ski the NW face:

a) I was completely knackered from trying to keep up with Paul.
b) The snow on top was terrible (wind and/or sun affected).
c) I am a 'candy ass'
