I know this board usually avoids political discussion but it is becoming increasingly obvious that the BC government is hell bent on more and more commercialization of public lands (BC Parks as well as crown land). There have been and continue to be a huge spate of requests for tenure for commercial applications in our public spaces. The latest is a proposal to run snowmobile tours on the Pemberton Icefield. If you want to know more or just want to shock yourself with the number of applications being currently processed check out the Land Water Corporation's webpage and see which of your favourite areas is currently under threat.

http://www.lwbc.bc.ca - go to "Current Land Applications"

On a brighter note, an application for cat skiing in a non-motorized use area of the West Kootenays - the Rossland Range - has been withdrawn by the applicant after huge local opposition.

I heard a rumor that someone wants to develope something (maybe a ski area) in the meadows of and behind Cheam peak. Does anybody know something about this?

Thanks for the links. People certainly are busy behind the scenes. And hey I don't think it's too political to post the sites. There has to be a balance. But I'll state here and now that we have no idea what we're doing.

Good point,Sandy. As with all times in human history, plenty of people out there just don't get nature at all.The world is not our singular cash cow,and we should be thinking about preserving natural heritage....OK,done ranting!

Alas as much as I hate to admit it, I see changes to our parks system happening more and more. As the population in BC grows and there is increased pressure on our lands, there is going to be increased development. Do I like it? Oh hells no. Do I think it is going to change? Oh hells no.
