Hunting for big trees on the west side of Lynn Headwaters with Mick and Doug. Mick says the area we were in probably hasn't been visited by humans in a long time. We christened the drainage we followed the "Hurley Drainage", in honour of the Bernese Mountain Dog currently missing just around the corner of the mountain:

Elevation Profile:

Google Earth birdseye:

Google Earth 3d:

Met up with the two hosers at the Lynn Headwaters gate just as the ranger was opening it up in the morning. Parked in overflow lot 1 and struck off for the Baden Powell. Up the stairs, then veered up and got on the Cedar Tree Trail. This would take us into Lynn park on the west side of the creek.
Doug made sure he had documented the trail junctions:
We stayed on well trodden and flagged trails, which first took us to a 47' circumference stump:
Continuing onwards, we climbed in and out of the gully that has a bit of yellow pollypro rope, and then cut upslope. The hunt for big trees began.
Google Earth 3d - the hunt:

We came across some old spur/skid roads, lots of old stumps, and a few big trees - both living and dead.
Mick photographs:

Old:
Soon we were climbing into the fog/cloud. This was unfortunate as it reduced our visibility - hopefully we didn't miss any giants just beyond view:

Doug and Mick climb higher:
The old stumps continued a surprising way up the slope - those old loggers were sure thorough. Here and there we found big trees. Mick will have to comment on the general findings and how they compare with what should have been expected from a location like that.
Doug chills out:

We finally got to an elevation where there wasn't anything interesting in terms of larger trees, and it was starting to get a little bluffy. We angled ourselves north and continued the hunt.
I soon spotted prey. How many points do I get for 11 semi-inflated balloons and two associated cards?

Almost next to that was another big tree, which Doug checked out:

We neared another drainage (could hear the water), so started making our way down - this line was further north than our uptrack, and we hoped we would come across something interesting. Sure enough, Doug noticed this rather large and potentially record-nearing Yew:
I forget the circumference - the boys will have to check in and let us know how it ranks on whatever big tree list there is out there.
An uneventful hike back (one deviation to see another few big trees off the main trail), and shared upper/lower Griffen with the mountain bikers before being deposited back at the cars.
Thanks for the adventure you two - looking forward to the next offtrail exploration into the unknown!
-Ryan

| Cool trip. We had some big-tree success near there a couple years ago, but I think a little further North. I really like the classic "west-coast rainforest" shots. |

Interesting day out and nice shots, Ryan. Too bad we didn't find the missing dog. The drainage was the most thoroughly logged one I've been in on the west side of Lynn Creek. Next time we'll hit one with more surefire action I think. My pics are here...

Interesting trip, nice to do it with an expert.
I didn't know you're interested in big trees, Ryan, always thought you're more into balloons... but perhaps that is changing. |

Nice work! Far too few people venture to that side of the Headwaters. I'm looking forward to getting back in there myself.

Ryan, you're killing me! You've got to geocode photos like that for me!

| Craig, that tree is approximately 20m below the top of Ryan's GPS track if I remember rightly, at about 760m or so |

He is, Jon, unfortunately, as far as I know. Even North Shore Rescue is looking for him right now as are all the North Shore running groups Thought I'd add a few more pics from the trek, click for captions

I waypointed a few - but not all - of the big trees. Message me for the GPS track with waypoints. (Can't remember if I waypointed that specific tree though.)

The ancient Pacific Yew tree we found just might be the largest of its kind in the Lower Mainland and the 2nd largest in the province.

Nice report guys!
I was wondering if the hike was possibly rigged?
Jk Good find! I suppose a bonus would be to find the dog though.
Nice shots of the trees towering over ya's, and the google earth view is icing on the cake. |

The stump is from a tree which would have been almost 16' wide in diameter, Karl. If it were alive it would be the second biggest cedar I've seen in the park. |

It's hard to imagine that such forests still exist. You guys sure found a gem! I love the desert but was shocked to see the huge trees at lighthouse park when I visited the other year in BC. I just sat out on my deck chair watching the sun set over a canyon. No trees; not even one.... thanks for the tree and green forest fix. cheers! jerry |

| I regret having blown by (night and rainy) some of the largest trees in the Pacific Northwest, Washington State's Hoh Rainforest -326ft Douglas Fir, 241ft Western Hemlock and their 305ft Sitka Spruce to name a few. Many of the big north shore trees are impressive. Thanks for sharing. |
