Only running three lifts today at a discounted ticket citing a lack of patrollers??

Part of the story:
http://www.rmoutlook.com/article/20110113/RMO0801/301139991/-1/RMO/sunshine-axes-ski-area-staff

Something is out of square here.

There are also some comments on TGR under the rockies roll call thread that are worth checking out.

The management there smells funny right now. A long time snow safety guy, and a few other long time supervisor guys were fired without a reason given. Keep an eye on the media in the next while on this one. A bunch of patrollers called in "sick" today, shortly after the firing. Due to this, only 3 chairs were open today.

SSV reduced the ticket price to a couple dollars short of the half day price, at around 11....one hour before the reduced afternoon price goes in to effect....about the same amount of time it takes to drive out there from Calgary. This was not announced until alot of comments appeared on their facebook page. Damage control no doubt.

One guy commented that he was told the lifts were closed due to mechanical issues, when it came out shortly after that it was due to patrol calling in sick.

This made the news quickly
http://www.cbc.ca/canada/calgary/story/2011/01/19/calgary-banff-sunshine-village-ski-patrollers-sick-protest.html

I can't imagine what kind of shit storm this will create if there are any incidents such as what happened in Fernie. I'm sure they wouldn't have escalated it to the media had they already tried to talk to the managers. This Firby guy seems like a class A douche bag. Not just based on this either.

Last time I skied Fernie terrain was closed for avy control, one area was Currie Bowl where the inbounds slide occurred. I accept and expect closures for this kind of thing (even though the Lizard and Currie bowls are two of my favorite areas) and if this labour action is over safety then they have my support. (even though I would be PISSED if I took the day off and paid the bucks only to be limited to what? A quarter of the available inbounds terrain.)

Would you be pissed at the patrollers, or would you be pissed at the liers that said all of the terrain was open on the morning report, which is what it did say this morning before the FB shit storm.

Sunshine seem to lie all the time!! They go on and on about how they're the only ones that accurately measure their snowpack, but they seem to magically get snow when there was none. One day last year I was there and the wind whipped up, closed pretty much everything by lunch and they gave us, zippo! back. Okay, I get that the weather isn't within their control, but other hills give you some dough back if they shut er really early. It's called GOODWILL. Sunshine thinks the sun shines outta their asses 'cause they have this guaranteed jam of Calgarians that clog it up and pay whatever Sunshine asks.

I'd be pissed that I wasn't informed or adequately compensated. I don't think the staff would have taken this action if it wasn't warranted.

John, I think they have an Edmontonian day. Around July first I think it is

I agree with you though, totally closing with that much day left should warrant some kind of compensation.

Word in town is some shits were caught by patrol in a closed area, shits became non cooperative, patrol called for back up and escorted them down, took id. One shit is related to SSV owner. Patroler first there was told to write apology letter. Firings.

Rest of patrol has had issues since then, called in sick today, told media. Ensuing shit storm in progress. Will be suprised if it doesn't make the news tonight.

Sounds Fishy, waiting for later developments. Three of those employees seem to warrant some kind of pension or major compendsation for their lifetime services.

I hope the $$ I've spent at Sunshine this year goes to the terminated employees. I can only imagine the attitude on the entitled little trust-fund prick.

My thoughts as well when I read that, Davin! Not too amazing how money turns people into shit stains."Rules don't apply to me because my daddy owns the place"!

Good to see your still kickin', haven't heard much from you as of late.

Sounds to me like they got some dinks managing the place, and the son sounds like the biggest dink of them all.

i'd rather ski at louise anyways, if i went to a resort. The owner used to be a climber and did several first ascents i am hoping to repeat and the views across the valley can't be beat on a sunny day!!

I would like to know what businesses the Scurfield family owns so I can boycott them all. I have worked in the ski industry for a long time now and see shit like this all the time. Sad to say, a sense of entitlement runs rampant in our spoiled rotten trust-fund babies.

So searching the net I find the family owns Sunshine and Marmot Basin. Should be easy to avoid those two.

I haven't skied at Sunshine hardly at all in the last few years, but they certainly won't be getting any of my business, this is the last straw. If I ever ski at a resort around here again it'll be at Louise or Castle.
