Escape from the green and grey Vancouver Christmas. A rainshadow effect started at Mount Cheam with large blue breaks on reaching West Gate. Would have been a decent sunny day if the sun had been anything other than near its lowest point on the horizon. Just east of Allison Pass found a moderate easterly wind and temp around -2 C. The 180 cm snow depth reported by Gibson Pass ski area is a lie. There's a scant 50 cm at Allison Pass (if that) and maybe something over one meter at 1800 m ASL. Boot pen is knee deep. On low angles the snow supports skis quite well. On a 35-degree SE-facing slope, the snow was heavily wind-affected but leaning well back in the boots to keep the tips up, the skiing was decent. For the skiing, no, but for being out in Manning, it was definitely worth the drive.

Looking back west where we came from. Elevation 1900 meters. Wind effect in the open is apparent. Dewdney and Snass in the background.
 Similkameen River crossing.
The wind effect on easterly slopes and ridgecrests is apparent in this pic. Frosty Mountain in the background.

Hiker240,
I don't recall seeing any boarders in Manning backcountry. Fat Dog's not the greatest place to board either based on what I've seen of boarding. There are several flat sections of road and a couple of dips. The terrain is a bit too low angled for boarding but it's an excellent X-C ski trip.
Three Brothers might work but it's badly wind-scoured right now. I would suspect the avy risk is considerable or high in the alpine.
I didn't dig a pit but skied a 35-degree slope and it was fine. There was no snow movement but the slope had lots of tree anchors and the snow is not that deep.
If you're looking for a low risk area, I'd try Alpen if you can get to it. Only the last pitch to the summit is high risk terrain. Other relatively low risk routes that might be decent for boarding: Metal Dome via Brandywine, Brew Hut from Roe Creek, East Tricouni Meadows from Chance Creek, Silverdaisy area (see Simon's report from yesterday), Zoa, Whistler from the Whistler Microwave road or from the top of Kadenwood Road. Also, Kelly Peak from Allison pass up the old microwave road. Short but sweet. (Then, of course, there's Big Ben on the north side of Kelly - higher risk, though). |
