I fear this is one of the last hikes I take Isaac out in the front carrier. It's been great to us but the combination of him getting heavier, taller, and the fact that he gets so excited in the trees that he donkey kicks me in the junk repeatedly has lead me to start the preliminary research on a good backpack.

With Christmas fast approaching, I'd like to get him a one. The only one I've tried out is the MEC happytrails, and while I found it to be pretty good, I didn't like it's lack of storage space. I'm interested in hearing what others use and why they like it. I don't mind spending up to $300 as we'll get our money's worth.

LOL, Cody, Isaac is just making certain there is no sibling in his future! Good luck with your search.

We have the Deuter Comfort carrier that MEC sells. Its very comfortable, both for the rider and the wearer. Definitely recommended.

i entered a link but it isnt going to where i wanted it to go. If your on facebook just go to the mountain equipment page and look under discussions and there is a post in there i had started and alot of people gave their opinions....it came down to deuter being worth the money i think. :-)

Deuter is totally worth the extra dough. Then, we sold it for more than 2/3 of what we paid, so overall "operating cost" is pretty reasonable.

We have a Dueter Child Comfort 3 and it is amazing. Last summer we needed use of a seconed one in K Country so we rented a Mt equipment co-op carrier. It didn't even come close to comparing to the DCC 3. Packing a child in a pack with everything you need for a day trip is like going backpacking. My 2 yr old weighed more last summer than my overnight pack weighs for a 3 night hike. so you definatly want good straps and support that a cheaper pack wont give you.

Too bad, you're just a few weeks too late but Deuter had a sample sale in burnaby and there were several of these baby carry backpacks on for great deals (under $100). Maybe find the link there might be a way you can contact their warehouse as there were many on the floor, there might be some stock left at these prices.

Littlelife "Cross Country"
(Despite it's name it has a lot of elevation gain already.) ;)

It doesnt have a lot of storage space but I strapped a small backpack to the outside. Heavy items (water etc) go in the Littlelife close to my body and lighter go in the backpack strapped to the outside.

it has a detachable bug/rain/sun shield that fits in the bottom.
it has an internal aluminum frame.
I like the 'leashes' that you can attach toys to, i used it for the sippy cup.

We used a backpack by Snugli that has an internal frame instead of the external aluminum ones a lot of the baby packs have and I found it more comfortable because it holds the baby's weight closer to your back. I don't know if they still make them but I've seen a few of them on craigslist and ours held up very well so a used one would probably be fine. It looked exactly like this one: http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/bnc/bab/2073313797.html

I found it very comfortable and it has lots of storage space and a rain/sun cover. My husband, who is 6'6" preferred the Tough Traveller packs because they're made for tall people.. I think the Deuter packs are good for tall people too. The best thing to do is try a few different ones and decide which one is most comfortable for you.

When I read this the title of this thread I immediately began thinking of which gear I could stash in a baby's backpack, now I see what you mean is adding the baby to the gear you already carry on your back. Personally I think all kids should have to pack some at least some gear for Dad, and Isaac looks pretty sturdy to me.

Hey Cody...

Gotta recommend the Deuter... we got ours used from Kijiji for $125... and it was used maybe 3 times. It was the 3rd one that we had, and it's the only one that actually carries like a decent pack.

Storage is good, and extra features like the retractable sun/rain shade are awesome. My kids are undersized, so it will still easy fit Kaia (my 3 year old daughter) still... although the only time she'll go in it is after we need to start making up time. She is 26lbs, so if you add all of the other stuff that I carry for Keir, Kaia and my wife... I'm up to an easy 35lbs and still feels like it is supporting the weight no problem.

With some of our son's disabilities, we expect that this will still allow him to get outdoors for a couple more years (he's 19 months).

The MEC-brand one makes sense if you're just going to use it really rarely a couple times and don't want to spend money. If you're going to be spending a lot of time wearing it, I'd definitely go for the deuter or the littlelife instead. both are built MUCH better in the harness, and are significantly more comfortable. I'm only 5'4", and I wear the MEC one at it's tallest setting, which is just barely big enough. I don't understand why it is so freakishly short, but I couldn't recommend it to anyone taller than me.
Between the others, both seem decent, and I'd go with the one that fits best.
I'm not sure they have more storage space though - I thought stuff-carrying was the job of whoever didn't carry the baby...

Glad my daughter was all grown up before I learned how to hike :).
I find it hard enough carrying my own weight up the mountains, and I'm not a heavy weight...

Thanks for all the advice, tidbits, and opinions everyone. I managed to locate a Deuter Kid Comfort 3 on the MEC Gear Swap. It's in great condition and I can't wait to try it out.

Yeah, most of the time that's a luxury I don't have as I try to give mom the day off every once in awhile and that's when me and Isaac hit the trail, so the more storage the better. On the other hand, if you are volunteering....

Yeah, eventually. If he packed anything for me now, it'd have to be something slobber proof.
