I need some assistance in regards to parking at the Diamond Head trailhead. I never have parked there in the winter and from what I understand most people do not park at the last parking lot unless they have a great traction vehicle. From what I remember there is a parking spot on the left and a bit further along there is parking on the right (on the inside of a tight righthand turn at the base of a steep road section). My question now... how far is this left parking area from the trailhead?
Thanks for any info.

there are two places where you can park if your vehicle can't make it all the way to the top parking lot.
there's the CHAIN area - about 2km from the trailhead. Small cars usually pull over here to put on their chains. The drop off on the left hand side is not as precipitous as on other parts of the road
then, there's the area just before Scary Corner - about 1 km from the trailhead.

Is that an official name for that corner? I like it!

I also read bivouac, and that's the way they refer to it. if you do a search from the main page for that term, that's what you'll get
yep - a very appropriate monicker, *especially* in winter!

That must have been the place where I spun out and had to do a bit of a forced park to put my chains on...haha!
