I had planned to do this trip twice this year and had to cancel because of bad weather. The forecast for today was good, so we tried it out. I decided to do the route from Andrew Nugara's book, mostly because it seemed prettier and I wanted to get some photos. Unfortunately it was overcast for most of the day.

There were six of us all together and we made a really good pace going up to the tarns. As we neared the tarns, we could see the lightly coloured scree indicating the route up to the col. The summit was in the clouds.

The tarns were fairly dry and we stopped there for a quick snack break. The scree up to the col was pretty loose and frustrating, but not the worst I've seen. There were several ways up and we split up, taking different angles to avoid rock fall injuries.

From the col, it was apparent that we had to gain and lose a bit of elevation before making the push to the summit. Most of the group went straight up, but I tried to skirt around a bit to save a bit of energy elevation. Wasn't able to do this very effectively, as the rock here was extremely lose. Even giant boulders seemed to be sliding down when stepped on.

We kept to the ridge and ended up at a bit of a cliff. It was possible to down-climb it, but it was also possible to avoid it on the right. Once past this section, we started gaining elevation again. It was like we had a bit of a sidewalk along the ridge. We could see a rock buttress that looked like it would cause some problems, but it's easier than it looks. A couple of folks in our group scrambled over, but most of us went around on the right.

The summit was covered in frost and we had zero views. I was really hoping for a photo of the Galatea Lakes! It was also quite cold and we stuck around long enough to get a group photo. As we made our way down, it started to clear up (of course). Here is the route:

Nice job. Mt Bogart is pretty impressive at over 10000ft! I wanted to do the Kane route this year but between weather, school, and work it will probably be next year, which is fine. Thanks for sharing your trip along Nugara's route from Sparrowhawk which looks very interesting!

Cheers,

Dan

Vern, have you done this route? It seems so much faster and more enjoyable than the Ribbon Creek approach. It took us about 7.5 hours and we really didn't go that fast. I didn't have my GPS with me, but I would estimate about 15 km roundtrip.

Dan, do this route! It seems way better.

Didn't realize that Andrew had a route on this one...seems that that might be my preference for this one now. Thanks for sharing Marko and nice pics!

Hi Marko,

So your thoughts on the route if some snow cover? Better to wait for dry to enjoy? Looks like a good day out anyways.

I was a bit skeptical about the weather last weekend when I saw the forecast was calling for high winds in Alberta and rain in BC. I changed my objective 4 times on saturday. First it was Elpoca, then Wind Mtn, then Skogan Peak and finally I settled for the Tower. I have never been so indecisive in my life... hehe

How long did it take you to do the West Ridge of Bogart?

Alan, I think a bit of snow would be okay, though I would suggest to do it on a sunny clear day. See Andrew's link below.

MtnNinja, it too about 7.5 hours. We weren't going that fast either.

Mick, really I think Andrew deserves the credit for that one. I saw his photos before I went and when I saw that window I was reminded of his picture of it: http://members.shaw.ca/anugara5/bogart2.htm

Those frost pics in your gallery are cool. No views down to Memorial Lakes etc, too bad.

I'll have to look closer at this route when I have my stuff handy, I don't recall being overly interested in Kanes route for some reason but can't remember why. For sure a blue sky objective.

Yeah, I love that shot Andrew has on his webpage of the lakes and the tower. Looks really cool. I was pretty disappointed about this.

Kane's route is 28kms round trip and just shy of 1700m elevation gain. It's mostly a plod up hillsides and scree. There's really no reason anyone should prefer this route over the Sparrowhawk Tarns approach.
