We've been planning to go hiking over the labour day weekend in Whitehorse wildland provincial park (near Cadomin). But it suddenly occurred to me at 3 in the morning that hunting season might be starting soon, and that this might be a dangerous place to go.

Does anyone know if and when hunting season starts in Alberta? Should we go to Jasper instead?

Hunting season, at least sheep season, has definitely started in Whitehorse. Avoid the area. My good friend does bird banding on the Macleod River near Whitehorse Creek and told me a couple of days ago that there had to be hundreds of horses and quads in the area. I have hiked there during hunting season without any problems, but maybe Jasper would be a better option at the moment.

Thanks. It just occurred to me that the same holds true for the other provincial parks, like Coooking Lake and Blackfoot. When does the migratory birds season start? That's when it gets nasty down there.

Thanks for the info Lobo!

I just found the hunting info on the web at:
http://www.albertaregulations.ca/huntingregs/

Click on "Big Game and Game Bird Seasons" for more details if anyone wants to look up other regions. It made me want to cry when I saw that they're licensing the killing of cougars and bears.

Anyhow, looks like we'll be going to Jasper.

Driving kills more people in Canada than hunting, perhaps we should ban cars?

Here's a little light reading for all the uneducated anti hunters.

Your argument is lame. One day you will see. When a person feels the need to defend their hunter status they're almost not a hunter.

If I were going to debate with you it's nice to know I wouldn't have to put my thinking cap on to win. You're logic makes no sense at all.

My comments are base upon facts, yours are based upon your opinion.opinions change from person to person, the facts don't

Fewer people in Canada have guns than have cars. Those who have a car drive them every day placing them at risk more often, while (hopefully) people with guns aren't shooting at something every day.

The logic fails.

I don't think its necessary to avoid provincial lands in September just because its hunting season. I would agree that anywhere with quad access might be a bit busier, but in general non-motorized FLUZs won't see a lot of use. Horse-outfitters, perhaps. I've done a lot of hiking in the Bighorn in September, and have run into the odd sheep bowhunter only. Where bright colours and you'll be fine.

Caribou: You can call me Safety Owl, but wandering around a place where people have guns doesn't seem like a good idea. One thing I worry about is that if we have to bushwack (as happens in less maintained areas) we might sound like deer or something. Besides, my husband's hiking clothes are mainly black and green and we were more interested in going hiking than shopping! We had a great trip to Jasper and hiked up Fryatt instead.

Paulyman: If you read my post, you'll note that I don't mention anything about banning guns. Instead I'm being pretty accommodating by choosing not to take my vacations in war zones or in hunting areas.
