We had a couple of days of rain and it was supposed to rain on this day too, so my girlfriend and I decided to do something easier. The Welsh Lakes seemed like the perfect choice.

The forest service roads were fairly good until the last 5-6 kms, where we ran into deep tire grooves. Some were so deep that if my wheels fell in, I may have been stuck. I drove over these very slowly with my low clearance Honda Fit and managed to get through.

I got some confidence doing this and decided to try and drive up the last 1.6 km of the road that was for high-clearance vehicles. I almost made it! There was a section near the top that was a little steep with lots of loose rock, causing my wheels to spin out. I had to do a 8-9 point turn and parked some 300 meters from upper parking lot along a little clearing. I would not recommend this with a bigger vehicle, the Honda Fit barely fit and in hindsight was not the best idea. :)

The trail doesn't offer much in terms of scenery until you get to the lakes. These are quite rewarding. There are four lakes in this area; Lower, Middle and Upper Welsh Lakes and Aberystwyth Lake. We only went to the Lower and Middle Welsh Lakes. The trail to the second lake is a bit confusing. We ended up following the open slopes above the first lake which eventually put us above the second lake, atop of a boulder field. From here we could see an obvious trail along the shore of the second lake and we followed this trail back to the first lake. It seems that at certain parts it disappears, but if you follow the shoreline, you just can't miss it.

I had my tripod with me and made some HDR shots. Sometimes I really enjoy these with reflections, but I found just the basic shots looked a lot better in this case.

Good stuff - another one that goes on my list.
Usually HDR is a good idea for very high contrast situation (such as sunny days with deep shadows, or indoor/outdoor combinations). In a cloudy day, when everything is evenly lit, straight shots look better (as you have found).

Your lucky! When I hiked this a couple years ago I got a flat on my way out and stupid me didnt have a spare. That added ALOT of km and time to my day since I left a note for my roommate to call 911 if I wasnt home.

This area is also great for alpine climbing if anyone is interested and sees next to no one. Having said that I just found out today that the Horsethief and Forster Creek FSR's will be closed later in Aug/Sept for bridge upgrades. Horsethief (access to Lake of the Hanging Glacier, Farnham Creek) will be closed at about the 41.5km from Aug 23 to Sept 3 and Forster (Thunderwater, Welsh Lakes, Catamount Glacier) will be closed at 21km from Aug 30 to Sept 17. I will also post this in the condition section

Glad to hear the bridges get replaced. I was wondering about a couple of them. :)
