Eryne and I were supposed to go to Athelstan, but of course our plan had to get changed on Friday after the landslide happened. Probably just as well with the crappy forecast.

We ended up driving into the city Saturday and doing some city stuff, then on to Squamish in the evening and up Chance Creek road to a pleasant bivi site a km or so past the Roe turnoff. Rained just a little bit overnight, but the mist was very low (no views) in the morning.

After a lazy pack-up we drove around into Roe Creek and up the freshly graded road to the end, finally leaving the car around 11-something.

The ascent to the ridge crest was a little slower than the clouds lifted, so we ended up well socked in on the ridge. It was also enlivened by a couple marmot sightings and by me breaking one of Eryne's ski poles when I threw an extra log at the creek crossing and missed.

Once on the ridge crest we ate some food and watched the clouds blow by. We got a few glimpses of the summit of Cypress for a grand total of around 10 seconds. I'd already done the scramble and Eryne didn't see the point if there were not going to be glorious summit views so we turned around and descended. Same stuff in reverse, back at the car around 5, and off to the Brew Pub for dinner (the Wigan Pier was closed )

A few photos

The trip up

Brief view of summit

The meadowed bits were damp, but lush

This seemed like a family group, two fullsize marmots and a small one. Papa Snaffle, Mama Snaffle and Junior? We thought so.

It cleared up enough on the way out that we got a view of Tricouni.

I like that shot "Brief View of the Summit", that pic shows a sense of mystery with that cloud shroud around the peak.

I suspect you will buying Eryne a new set of hiking poles, and you will be in her good graces, better than ever.

its so nice when they are with family...it can get lonely out there, nice to see a family of marmots together, rejoicing and displaying such strong family values! had to do family mediation with some marmots once, not so pretty.

Any snow-free spots on the ridge to camp on?
Next time, just throw her across.

I'm wondering if the ice cave under the glacier is already accessible - would make for a fun little side trip (it should be easy to find by following the north edge of the glacier below the col). Probably best later in the season though, when the glacial ice is exposed - the cave is more roomy then and you can see blue ice inside.

Can you tell me what the condition of the road is? 2WD-able?

Yes and freshly graded as far as the Brew trail spur. Which means there might be active hauling from there soon.
