Maybe Lomas Lake? Some ACC members recently cleaned the trail up, but unfortunately it does start with a 7k logging road trek due to gate at the start of cottonwood main.

From Lomas you can summit either El Capitan or Landale, but I'm not sure if there are trails from the lake on.

I've also heard good things about the Landale/El Cap area.

Another good spot might be Mount Whymper http://www.summitpost.org/view_object.php?object_id=439368.

If you're up for a drive (both ways!), there are a few decent valley hikes at Carmanah Walbran Park. http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/parkpgs/carmanah/

The Copper Canyon gate is locked 24/7 now due to high fire hazard, so Mt. Whymper is not accessible until probably after Labour Day.
Heather Mountain requires a good two hour logging road hike, but after that you are in really nice alpine.
I'd prefer Lomas Lake to Mount Landale. It's just past Youbou (only a few km gravel road). The first 7km is along a logging road but it follows the beautiful Cottonwood Creek. The lake is nice and the trail to Mount Landale is fairly easy to follow.

Just did Heather Mountain this weekend, a true gem. After about 650 metres of elevation gain on a logging road you come out into beautiful Forbidden Plateau like terrian. Watch out for elk. Highly recommended!
