It has been a while since I posted an adventure here. I've had a baby since. My first real hike has been to Windfall Lake. The pamphlet from Tumbler ridge visitor center estimated the return trip to be 6 hours, I would say it is only a 4-5 hour return hike.
The hike started out swampy, crossing back and forth over little streams. We had little peeks into the mountains through the trees.
Then we started to climb and had little boulders to work around.
The head walls closer to the lake are fairly steep but there were plenty of trees to grab on to and hoist ourselves up. The rocks are loose so on a rainy day this part would be very slippery.
The alpine meadows greeted us with wonderful smells. The Heather was blooming when we went through. At least I think it's called Heather, little pink flowers which smelled heavenly on green shrubby stems (didn't get a picture of it). Lot's of flowers!

The lake was of course very beautiful.
We made sure to fill up our water bottles (filtered) with the glacier water. mmmm.
Glancing around I wondered where the trail to Tunnel Mountain continues on? I had hoped to one day do an overnight at the lake and continue on to Tunnel Mountain. I didn't see any flagging heading in that direction. I saw several possible routes. My friends made me swear not to drag them up the scree. LOL. If that is the way up I'll have to take my hubby!
The hike was a great day hike and I highly recommend it! :0) |

Those head walls are very slippery after a rain as a buddy and I found out when we overnighted there in /06.
That lake water is just snow melt, not glacial. The normal route from the lake to Tunnel Mtn. is straight across the lake, up that rather steep looking scree slope. Guess you'll have to talk your hubby into going. Kevin Sharman(CT member) did a trip report a year or so back and followed the main creek up the valley on his way to Tunnel mountain. |

Thanks mountainmamma for posting, and congrats on the new member. This brings back fond memmories of our trip to this lake last year. Beautiful spot. Kevin and I headed up the Scree slope up from the lake to walk the rige to the immediate south. Later on he did Tunnel Mountain; when I was recalled to Vancouver. Just missed out then on Tunnel Mountain.....

| Charles Helm has great pictures and route maps in his book Exploring Tumbler Ridge, of Windfall Lake, Tunnel Mountain, and Mt Crumb. Aswell as many other great hikes around Tumbler. If you want this book look for it at the shops in town. They usually have a copy of it laying around. Great job getting back out after having a baby. We had are second little girl last year in july and headed out to Berg Lake in September, We just couldn't stay away. |

Did you bring a video camera...? I know, one track mind, but we're looking for 2-4 minute videos of your Tumbler Ridge Adventures....real2reel.visittumblerridge.ca.
Windfall is near the top of the to-do list, especially now that I have my new camera....
