We decided to go up Sumas Mtn. June 26/10 as, much like Burke Mtn., it is a place we have biked a fair bit so we decided to see what else is there. As usual our plans didn't go exactly as we thought. We had intended on leaving one vehicle on Sumas Mtn. Road and start from the other side at Quadling Rd by the dam. Unfortunateley this is what we found when we tried to start from the dam side. Be warned there is no trail access at the Quadling Rd. point. We drove back around and started from Sumas Mtn. Road. Just a few markers to get you on your way. The trail is in the woods the entire way, some occasional nice views of a river or creek. It's interesting as for part of the way you are on the old Centennial Trail with the origainal markers still alive and kicking so to speak. We arrived at Chadsey Lake about 1-3/4 hours in and carried on to the top which took about 2-1/2 hours. The thing with this trail is that because we couldn't start from the other side of the mountain we knew we could have left a car pretty close to the top hiked up and drove back orrrrrrr being really lazy we could have drove up to the top and hiked down to the other vehicle. However we did get to enjoy this stellar view for our lunch break Which made it pretty well worth while doing on a nice blue sky day.

That's the problem in the Valley - there are hardly ever any nice views in the summer because of the smog that funnels from Metro Vancouver through Abbotsford and out to Hope. Sumas Mountain is really a shoulder season or winter hike when - if the skies are clear - the views are pretty decent.

Sounds like you made lemonade with the lemons you were handed that day. Good for you in still having a wonderful hike despite your initial hurdles.

Thank you for the photos, especially the beautiful shots of the views.

I especially interested in your TR, seeing you tried to get in by the Dam end of the trail. So those guys just blasted away and did not re-route the trail.

Check out our report February 2009, we might have been almost the last ones to hike up this way.

At that time part of the trail was already missing, so we skirted the edge after doing a few trail switchbacks up. Then we hiked up to Chadsey Lake and back from there.

Thanks for the report.

It seems that the trailhead from that side is completely gone now. You guys had quite the adventure Karvitk. I'm wondering if anyone has bothered to post that the trail is no longer available at the peak side of that route? It would really suck to come up from Sumas Mtn. Road anticipating heading down to Quadling Rd, almost getting to the end then finding it's no go.
