I'm having to fit hikes into small spaces. After work, afternoon. I've tramped up Elk Mtn a couple of times after work last week or two, but hoped for something more challenging. I was able to leave work abit early, and hoped I could do Markhor and the traverse across to the NE Ridge of Needle Peak. I heard abit of griping and discontent about this route from some other guys on this site. I'd have to revisit this place myself.

I left the car at 4:30, was back at 9:30. It's an awesome feeling to arrive at a summit in evening. And the route was really fun! A good stiff gale made it more challenging.

First view of Needle from Markhor
Whats not to like?
Looking back at Marhor. The hikers I had were crappy soft foam type soles, with little grip. I've been able to friction down Marhor handily previously, but this time I needed to scramble back up abit and then over farther to the left on descent to accomodate my shoes.
On route
Showing the fine bit of exposed ridge with Markhor behind.
What kind of creature?
Looking down the 2nd crux...exposure on NE Ridge.
Route up Needle Peak.
Back at Yak and Markhor
What a great day!

This boulder budged slightly.
Shadows are gettin long, and in conclusion this is a very route!

That's a great looking traverse, maybe not in my league, but nevertheless. Keep up the good trips, Ed.

I can't say what the route is like as I've never done it. It sure looks nice for you though and you got some great photos.

That's a great route, despite the friable jingus handholds. Super photographs & good sustained effort!

Nice pics.. well done esp in day hikers...not sure I'd want to cross the slab in soft soled shoes. It's a fun traverse though....!

Al(yes Thursday), I saw a slew of cars at the trailhead, but wouldn't have imagined you would be up there.

Friable rock yes...and scrambling up and down granite ballbearings overtop slabs, means you have to pay attention. I was getting abit too casual in an easy non-lethal area when my feet went out. I wasn't paying attention, I slammed down on my arm and this was the result. Sorry in advance!!

And there are some of those ball bearing stones on Webb in a few spots too.

My original comment was to be, "Handily done!". But yikes, that hand will hurt for some while. Love the soft-light photos.

Awesome evening Ed. Would have been fun to join you on this one. Nice to see you had some clear weather and some great photo ops. Lets get out soon. August and september will be less work and more play for me... I hope.

Sorry I'm a bit behind on current events, but this is one of the better TR's out there. Looking down your traverse route from Needle Peak, I know this one's not for me (or the faint of heart). It would severly suck to have even a minor fall on that stucco-like rock .
