I got to the trail head at about noon yesterday, put on some sunscreen, and quickly began the trek. The first 80% of the climb is shady forest, but the other 20% is in the direct sun. One of the trail intersections was completely flooded also.

The hike up took me about 5 hours with three or four 5-10 minute breaks, and the way down was a little under 2 hours. The scenery was absolutely beautiful. Keep in mind all these pictures were taken with my cell phone.

yeah I did.. there was what looked like a 7-8 ft wide gully with about 3-4 feet of a snow bridge going across in the way. it looked pretty sketchy but I tested it out first. I got a picture of the top somewhere here...

I think that's it

thanks guys, I made some pine needle tea when I got to the top... I think I'm hooked on mountain climbing :D

can anyone recommend a harder mountain than outram, with a beautiful view in the lower mainland? I've done the lions, coliseum twice, seymour, and the chief.

Great job lsnider and sounds like good time you made! Speedy Gonzales. I would love to get up Outram again on a clear day and as for harder hikes in the area... I look forward to hearing what others have to say.

Do you mean harder as in a harder (longer/more elevation gain) hike but still technically hiking, or a harder mountain as in one requiring climbing/scrambling/mountaineering skills?

I would say more mountaineering. I need to read more on it, but that's what I want to do.

It wasn't nearly as nice a day today on Outram. Fog coming and going most of the way up, and the top of the mountain never cleared. Fresh snow! above treeline. Rocks coated with wet black lichens and snow were slippery and unstable. It even snowed a little while I was on the summit.

Last signin at the summit register was Sept. '09. The true summit doesn't see many visits and the register goes back many years. Obviously also lots of people don't sign in, though. The register's pen is dysfunctional, so anyone going up soon could take a pencil to leave there.

You must have been jogging down the trail to make it down in 2 hr, Isnider. It took me 2.5 to get down, but 4 to go up. Not much reason to stop for pictures today. Odd that it can be 22 degrees at YVR and freezing on the peaks.

Pick up a copy of Matt Gunn's scrambles guide.

I haven't been up Outram yet so I can't say how it compares, but Needle Peak at the Coquihalla summit is pretty sweet.
