Tried yet another new hike today.. Mount Amadis from Cultus Lake. Took the route from Edmeston that is described in 103 hikes. This trail was really mean. I haven't hiked too many trails... so far the ones Ive done are...
bear mountain campbell lake eaton lake elk-thurston flora lake greendrop lake kvr (othello tunnels) hope-nicola valley
That being said every one of these hikes I have managed to do well before the suggested time, in some cases in half the time that is listed on this site or in 103 hikes. But not for this hike... 4 hours in to the hike (non stop no breaks) I still hadn't reached the summit, and I was forced to turn back since the steepness of the final ascent to the peak combined with my destroyed legs and some icy slick snow all added up to a hazardous situation I wasn't comfortable with.
The steep sections on the international ridge section were far steeper than anything I have seen yet, and it was raining so all the loose sticks and rocks on the ground were extra slippery. My bumhole sure puckered a few times along the spine of the ridge where there were drop offs on either side of me and id slide out on a wet branch. Then there was the flat section after you descend from the ridge into the saddle area before the last ascent to Amadis peak, there is so much deadfall and busted up branches that its sometimes hard to see the trail, and it sure slows down what could be an easy jogging section to a snails pace.
Anyway here are some pics, it got real foggy and my phone died moments after I took the last pic of the snow before turning around.

How was the trail on that side hill just before the ridge? It was sliding away to nothing when I was there last. Good TR and new stairs that were not there before. |

| There were a few spots just before you get up to the ridge that were pretty worn down and it was pretty muddy as it was raining a bit up there. A few times I thought Id end up sliding back down the trail but there were enough exposed roots and trees along the side to hold on to going up, and on the way down I pretty much just hop down those sections so it's not as much of an issue. Further down the ridge though there was a section of the trail that must have slid down the mountain and it was kind of sketchy, but then again it was only maybe 6 feet across so other than that overall I thought the trail itself was in fairly decent shape. Keep in mind was my first time up here as well so i don't know how it used to be. |
