Hi Just wondering if anyone out there is planning to hike the entire Stein Valley this coming summer 2010. I plan on going but would like to be in a larger group. If the times are right maybe we can go together. People in my group are experienced in remote multiday backpacking. We all have our own gear and will not be a burden. If you are planning to go and would not mind some extra bodies to share the trail with then please drop me an e-mail. I have not finalized exactly which week we will go but I am estimating some time in July or late August.

PS: When you e-mail me please refer to the Stein on the topic. Otherwise, I may end up deleting the e-mail for fear of it being spam.

Edited on March 19, 2010- I still plan on doing this hike. During week of August 28-Sept5, 2010. It will take about a full day to travel, drop off gear and set up vehicles.

Direction:West to East.

Route finding skills: I have been hiking for a lot of years and I have always found my way home. Anyone can get lost but not everyone finds their way home. I have been through the Stein before so there should still be some old bread crumbs on the trail. Some of those bread crumbs may go around in circles. Following those ones are ok. But, whatever you do never follow the ones that go over the cliff. :)

Rubicon: Will be at trail head/vehicle off loading point. ( because the plan is for vehicle(s) to be moved to other end).

I'm kinda interested, too. Only done the upper portion from Lizzie Lake to Tundra lake about 10 years ago and a coupla K of the Lytton side. Keep me in the loop on this one, please.

I plan on doing the traverse this summer as well. I've been up to the shores of tundra and back a couple of years ago. I think this is going to be a good year to do it for a couple of reasons. The snowpack will not be a factor, and Lizzie Lake Forest Service Road almost completely overgrown. If not sure how many more years it can be done without someone clearing it out. I plan on taking the figure eight route, and heading up to Elton as a side trip. It would nice to have a good sized group for this kind if trip. Keep me informed!
Cheers

Hi All

PUG time!

Originally, I posted hoping to have my small group join with another group to do the Stein Valley Traverse. This is a tough backpacking/hiking adventure covering over 100km. Did I mention that it is a tough hiking adventure? It will take about 7 to 8 days of hiking with a heavy backpack over some good old BC mountainous terrain. This topic got a lot of viewer hits. Needless to say it is clear that there are some lone hikers that would like to do this trip as well but they do not belong to a group and would like to join or make a group. ( My group is me and my 15 year old son). Basically, I am willing to be part of a "Pick up a Group" to make this adventure happen.

Some of you have e-mailed me indicating your interest in doing this hike please let me know if you are in or out. It would be good to get a group of about 6 to do this adventure. However, I do not believe in excluding people from adventures so if the group gets larger than 6 then I could branch off the extra people into a second group. Let me know if you are willing to be part of a second group when you e-mail me. I still plan on doing this hike over 8 days starting August 28 to Sept 4, 2010.

The idea now is to get dropped off at the Western trail head on the morning of August 28. (I do not feel comfortable leaving my vehicle in the remote bush unattended for that many days.)

We can discuss camping locations . I am thinking Lizzie Lake for the first night or even Arrowhead lake. Head through to Cathal Lake and down towards Puppet Lake and into Stein Lake. etc.

The Adventure will require us to ascend and do the alpine part of the trail in the first few (3-5) days. Then we will descend into Stein Lake and hike through the Upper Stein Valley and eventually we will hit the more dryer lower Stein Valley. Once we hit Ponderosa Shelter we should be able to hike out in one day.

There is a Greyhound bus that leaves Lytton at about 4pm during the day. Check out their website for time and costs. I think it is about $55 for a one way refundable ticket to Langley or Vancouver. It is less money about $30 or $40 for a non-refundable ticket. ( For accurate costs it is better that you check it out on their website). After the hike , I plan on doing a load of laundry and grabbing a shower before I board any bus. The bus ride will be about 3 to 5 hrs to Langley or Vancouver. I think this method of getting dropped off and taking the bus home is better than setting up cars at both ends of the trail.

For this PUG every member should be self sufficient. No Mooching. Prepare for all kinds of weather and be in shape. Prepare for 8 days of backpack/hiking. Practice minimum impact camping and pack your garbage out. Be aware of back country dangers including slips, falls, insects, animals, weather etc. Following the first day I expect to hit the trail at or before 8 am. The earlier the better.

(There is a female hiker that wants to do this hike but does not want to be the only female on the trip. So women are welcome to come. )

I did this traverse 17 years ago. I did not train and would be considered out of shape when I started. I had a $20 pup tent that I coated with water repellant Scotch guard. No fly. Lucky for us the rain held off until the last night. We did it in 4 nights and 5 days of hiking. We went the harder way too. I am a lot older now and we will have to hike an additional 7 -8 miles up hill because there was a bridge washout on the Lizzie Lake forest service road so 8 days should be a reasonable amount of time to do this.

I thought of checking out this area, and make a single day adventure of exploring part of it.

I'll have to see closer to, but I am interested to hear what people report in terms of damage caused by last years forest fire regarding the trail and ease of passage. It was still bad last year from the (1996?) fires.

Check out the thread above, and links to the the BC Parks info pages.

Fires ravaged the Stein last year. From what I gather, much of the upper valley burned and crossings could be major problem. Caveat hikor.

Hey SeeGuard and everyone interested, there is a talk about forming a second group because the first group is full. I'm supposed to get the second group started but I need to see if I can fit in August 28 to Sept 4, 2010.

That time seems quite uncertain to me right now. There's some "work" I have to take care of in late Aug/early Sept. If you were the other person who contacted Seeguard or wanting to do Traverse, please start the 2nd group and hopefully I'll join when I am certain that I can empty my schedule that time to go.
