Hi all,
Can anyone help me with information on Father and Son Lake, just south of Port Alberni (off Bamfield Rd onto Museum Main onto Thistle Mine Rd). I am new to exploring the logging road areas and although it seems the lake is a designated recreation site, the Museum Main road had several large signs saying "no unauthorized access" and that the gates would be closed at 4:00pm and on weekends. Of course, it was a weekend when I tried to visit the lake and they were open, but I didn't want to chance it. Has anyone else been to this lake, or can anyone help educate me on "the general rules" of exploring these logging road areas? Much appreciated!

In June 2008 and June 2009, I went to Mt McQuillam via Father and Son Lake. We followed the access instructions for the Thistle Mine approach described in Phil Stone's "Island Alpine", 1st ed, 2003, page 79. I don't remember seeing any restricted access signs as the ones you describe. On the 2009 trip I noticed there had been recent logging activity and road reconstruction near the lake. Possibly, the logging company has expanded the cutting areas. Contact the logging company to find out about access. Anybody know which logging outfit is in that area?
