Some time ago I noticed that a number of my TRs ( and others) somehow ended up with text issues. Not sure how it happened, Jim, but at any rate here's an example. Starts in the first line of this one....

’ seems to subbed for apostrophes, among other things, in case you don't see it on your browser

I think it's a new secret retread language.
And Mick's posting is a coverup.

That is weird. Looks like some kind of encoding issue. We'll look into it.

Many of my trip reports have this issue too. I think it's a function of cut & paste from Word but the gibberish symbols didn't show up until some setting or another on the site was changed. I've also had some issues in the recent past with cut & paste stripping my punctuation.

I think it must be related to some computer setting. I always use Firefox, because I could afford to buy it, and I get Mick's funny symbol at work (I know, I know!). At home, I can see the apostrophe properly.

I suspect it's a language setting.

I get the same results (funny symbols) both with IE8 & Firefox.

It looks like a character encoding issue. The text is encoded using "Unicode (UTF-8)", but many browsers default to "Western (ISO-8859-1)". You can change this preference in your browser. In Firefox, it's under the "View : Character Encoding" menu. But if the server is modified to send out response headers which specify the character encoding, that should fix the problem regardless of browser defaults.

Right now the header reads:

Content-Type: text/html

So the browser has to guess. If it can be changed to:

Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8

Then hopefully (guessing a bit here, character encoding is a finicky beast) things will be good.

I had issues with Firefox in the past and got rid of it.
No more problems, and not here either.I get what I type for, though last week the "Aurigma image uploader" was not responding very well.

You are exactly right, I submitted this issue long ago, but was told it was because people are copying and pasting from Word Documents. I strongly believe it is the Character Encoding within the CT code. I've seen many many threads that are garbled because of this issue.

Thanks - that fixed the issue for me! I write all of my TRs in Word or Notepad so reading my old TRs was annoying with extra jibberish.

All better now?

And why can't *I* enter the crazy Word quotes? They get stripped out to blank for me. Maybe just the old TRs are affected? Is the stripped out thing a bug, or am I loosing it?
