The book is done and almost ready to roll out. The books are printed and I am just waiting for the included interactive DVD's to be duplicated and put into the back of the books. For those of you that may be interested in purchasing a copy I will be doing a couple of book signings in Jasper on the May long weekend. Saturday May 22, 2010 10am - 2pm at the Friends of Jasper Store in the Jasper Visitor Centre & Sunday May 23, 2010 10am - 2 pm at Totem Ski Shop in Jasper. I will have the book for sale in many outdoor shops and book stores across Alberta by the end of May.

If any of you have any suggestions on stores that I should approach to stock the book, I would appreciate any feedback.

I am really excited about how the book turned out and I think everyone that buys one will be impressed with this unique type of trail guide.

I did take alot of the input from the forum into account when putting the cover together. See the attached shots of the final covers.

Looks great. Will the DVD have the actual trail data suitable for loading into a gps?

The DVD has trail waypoints in .gpx format that can be uploaded into your GPS unit or viewed on other gps mapping software (like mapsource, oziexplorer etc). All the major features and campgrounds will have waypoints. The number of waypoints range from 3-4 for short hikes upto around 50 for the longer backpack trips. The book also has the printed coordinates listed for all the major features.

The DVD has a unique geo linking interface as well. Each picture that is geo linked also has the coordinates listed so if you saw a picture of something you were interested in, you could see the exact coordinatess of that picture. There are probably over 4000 geo linked photos on the DVD.

The DVD also has the Google earth .kmz for each trail. These can be easily converted to .gpx or any other format if you have a GPS mapping program or use online programs like gps visualizer. They can then be sent up to yur gps unit.

I got a few minutes at lunch to quickly look through your book today Rob and I was very impressed. I can only imagine how interesting it will be once I can download the disk and see all the photos you have included.

It was nice meeting you today at Totem's. Thanks for the showing of your book. You have a very good product there.Ii really like the interpretive disc. That sets your book apart from the rest of them. I don't really need one as I know the park pretty well, but I would have no problem recommending it to some of the many tourists I meet or buying it as a gift for family or friends interested in this area

It was was nice meeting both of you (Lioness and Lobo)in Jasper. Thanks for the compliments as it means alot coming from a couple of local hikers and outdoors persons. Off to Edmonton and MEC this Saturday for another book signing. I would love to see other CT'ers and talk hiking and trails if they are around.

Thanks for the nice visit at MEC, Rob.

Nice book, and the CD is very helpful in giving an idea of the kind of conditions one might expect to encounter. Just one point, to exit from the program, you are supposed to push Alt-F4, but mine copy won't let me out. Had to eject then reboot. Any suggestions?

Starting to think the problem is a glitch on my keyboard. Sure is a helpful program, though.

Thanks, Rob. The DVD works fine on my work computer - been playing with it all morning.

One particularly nice feature is that is shows you the actual trail conditions - whether well-marked or obscure, and at various times of the year.

Now I just have to buy a new keyboard!

I picked up a copy of your book when in Jasper this past weekend. It is awesome to have a resource available that focuses on Jasper - most others will only describe 10 or so popular trails. And as mentioned before, the DVD is an invaluable tool with your book.

I am glad you are enjoying it. I just got back from Jasper this past weekend as we were promoting the book and GPSìng at the parks day celebration. It was nice to talk to many people who have been utilizing the book.

Picked up a copy of your book from the Friends of Jasper National Park shop on Parks Day. The digital data / DVD is great as is the book. That's quite a collection of GPS receivers you've collected including the old 38. I had a Garmin 12 as my first unit which looks identical.

I am glad you liked it. Yes I have accumulated a wide variety of GPS units inlcuding the old GPS 38. I remember when the Garmin 12 (xl) was the most popular unit and I was amazed at all the features it had. They have come along way since those old units. I still turn it on once in a while but it is so slow and looses signal if I get under any canopy.

Hey, Rob!

Any chance of you doing something soon for the Nordegg area? Very hard to get maps there.

I am just finishing up a 2nd edition to my "Hiking North Central BC" Trail Guide (which has 30 new hikes for a total of 100)and will be looking at new projects for next summer so I will keep this in mind.

I have never hiked in this area, but are there many hikes?

Many good hikes, including some amazing scambles. Some are well-marked, but other are pretty bad.

As Rachel has commented, the lack of good information is probably part of what has kept the David Thompson corridor less heavily travelled than Jasper or Banff, but it's also a real problem for those who do decide to go there.
