After 4 years of spending most of my summers and weekends in Jasper National Park hiking ( dragging my wife and friends up and down mtns) and GPS'ing the trails, I am nearing the completion of a new Trail Guide on "Hiking Jasper". This guide is different than the exisiting guides (which are also great resources). The main difference is a CD that comes with the book (in the back cover). The CD has over 4000 geo-linked photos, Google earth kmz files, trail waypoints, elevation profiles, trail slope by color plus a lot more. All the trail distances are accurately GPS'd and mapped as well.
I am finlaizing the book over the next couple of months,so it will be ready for the spring hiking season. I would love to have some feedback on the cover and some of the other features. I started a blog ( did not know what a blog was a month ago but I am giving it a try) to try and get some feedback on the book before I finalize it.
Here is the address to the blog http://hikingjasper.wordpress.com/
New list of shots addedd Jan 18, 2010

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

I have to vote for the top left, because it can only be taken as a perverse joke and it made me laugh out loud!

Thanks for the responses. It looks like an early leader is emerging.
Maybe I have perverse sense of hiking as everytime I see photos like the top left one it just makes me want to find out where that trail is and go hike it. Coincidentally, when I asked friends about the different cover shots I got the same response as DCIPHER.
Keep the responses coming!

| Bottom right is my first choice and then top right would be second. |

top right is too generic of a jasper pic for me. I like bottom left because is shows a few different aspects of jasper.
I would change the colour as well as it looks like an old 1970's trail guide. (unless that is the look you were going for).

| I'll be completely different and suggest the middle bottom cover. I like the aura of mystery and hey where does this go more so than the typical peaks-in-the-distance shots. |

Well that was kinda what I was thinking. I tried to think of what colors came to mind when thinking of Jasper and other National Parks. See the attached photo of one of the thousands of trail signs in the park. I thought that yellow on brown or brown on yellow would give the book an official park look.
What do you think? Good idea or not?

Glad to see that a Jasper specific trail guide has come out. Want to do the Jasper Rock Climbing guide too?! Great job on all the work.
Without being too harsh though...the cover does look a little old fashioned and quite boring. Both the design and the colours (and even the photos a little).
I'm assuming this is a somewhat personal venture rather than through a publisher at the moment? Have you thought about asking a graphically-minded friend for a stab at design? I'm sure an outdoorsy person wouldn't mind helping out a friend with a small thing like that for free. And also if you were struggling for photos there are some amazingly talented people on here who may contribute something for free to see their photo on the cover of a hiking guide...
I know the cover of a hiking book isn't as important as the inside, but you would probably be competing with people who already have Hiking in the Canadian Rockies, so going a little way to grab peoples attention and show them it is a quality item can't hurt. |

Just read more about your project on your website. Love the idea of the CD coming with the book. Great idea!
Maybe you could also ask for photos from people on here to be included in the book/on the cd? Awesome photos are always a great addition. |

Good looking project Rob, but as to the colors on the cover, I think those you have displayed here make "your" book look too much like a "Parks" publication. It might be confused that way should you stick with this color scheme.
Also, as much as I like the shot of the Ramparts in the Tonquin, as mentioned that is a fairly generic photo of Jasper and I think you could find a much nicer shot. Just my 2 cents and I don't mean to be rippin' your efforts apart, but you asked. |
