After all this weather lately, there is a good cance to get a 1.5 meter dump in a few days.We need an arctic front to mingle with a good big ass wet storm. It would be most embarassing to have it look the way it does now.

There might be a ray of optimism for Cypress - it is currently snowing lightly and Russ Lecate of News 1130 had this to report today on their web site:

"VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - It's crunch time for Olympic organizers on Cypress Mountain as they deal with a major shortage of snow. They've moved to 'Plan C', which entails building wood frames and straw foundations for artificially-made snow. But there is good news, as a decent winter storm on the way.
News1130's Meteorologist, Russ Lacate, says Cypress could be getting a break. "The northeast wind is drawing down the colder air from the Interior. The freezing level is dropping as well and that's keeping the slopes of Cypress in the snow zone. All of tonight throughout Monday, 10 to 15 centimetres of new snow is expected in the forecast over the next 24 hours."
But Lacate says it's not all good news. "It dries up Wednesday and then the warm jetstream returns. It's a risk of rain on the ski hills by Friday."
Organizers are keeping calm about the mild weather though. They say even if there's no real snow by February 12th, they can make enough to keep the Games going. But Russ thinks we'll be heading into a cooler, drier trend through the early part of the month so while it may not be white, at least it won't be wet.
Until that rain moves in later this week, skiers and snowboarders will enjoy some pretty good alpine conditions. Grouse has a snow depth of 126 centimetres with 10 runs open. Seymour has a base of 98 centimeters. Cypress is closed until after the Olympics."

Let's hope for the best - we want athletes from all countries to be able to achieve their best - they have trained and sacrificed much to get to where they are today - so whether you are on the slopes or watching them on TV or the internet root for your favorite team.

I have been lucky enough to have landed a volunteer position with a visiting delegation for the Paralympics at Whistler.

No need to worry, apparently VANOC must have removed all the snow from Manning Park in an effort to top up the runs at Cypress Bowl because they are now working on the Coquihalla. Was up on Zoa today with the Valley Outdoor Assoc. and there was a steady stream of dump trucks removing snow at the Zopkios Ridge rest area. I don't really see a problem with this as long as they put it back after they are finished with it.

Say what you will about the Olympics, but I have never seen so many people walking around downtown, smiling, having a good time. And the city looks great.

Vectorial Elevation is really cool too.

It's true, I had a little jaunt around downtown today too, and all the money-wasting scandals aside, for once the place is vibrant and lively as a real city should be.

Have to agree with Ryan - it was humming in downtown and around Robson Square last night and not with the usual pub crowd but with many many happy families - Robson Square ice rink had a band scheduled to play on Friday night to 8PM - there were over 600 people on the steps of the plaza enjoying the show that the band played til 11PM.

Also it's nice to see Granville Street finally starting to look like a street that you would be proud to have in a downtown core - also check out the refurnish neon sign on the Vogue Theater.

FYIW - apparently the cost of the let's save Cypress at all costs is being paid for out of VANOC's contingency fund.

================================

You know , this is rather pervertly funny.
This is the {stated} warmest west - coast weather - january on record.
With visions of last year's ice and cold we had for a number of weeks over here, I bought this winter my First Ever Bag Of sidewalk salt.
Doesn't look like I'll ever use it.
HHmmm, what if I lived around Cypress, and took a walk with my Pack and pockets full of salt, . And if others got the same idea ?? Would that make me a Terrorist ?. Aw Gee !
