A nice sunny day, back in recent time, stopping to rest near a Bridge, bending down for a splash to the face ...

... the kids running back and forth...

... then stopping on the Bridge and stirring up the resident Terror...

... Jesus ! Don't just scream...

... Run Kids , run ...

... ...

What a day , eh !

heheheh, When we hiked the WDFMT last summer, we ran into two mud wasp nests. They were both right in the middle of the trail, with no way around them, as we were on a single lane steep downhill when we(I)unknowingly pissed them off. I was lucky though, my dog and I were the only ones in the group to not get stung. It pays to take the lead sometimes

Ever notice that mid to late summer, often when there's some bits of paper wasp nest on the ground, often there's a ground wasp nest near by? I've asked biologist and entomologist friends about this and have searched the net, but haven't found an answer. Do wasps migrate from paper to ground? Are ground wasps predators of paper wasps? Or do other predator animals destroy the paper nest, forcing the wasps underground in defense? Anybody have any answers?

I've seen evidence where bears dig into the ground nest to eat the larvae.
I've read somewhere that the Ground types and the Hanging types are different from each other, one is essentially a protein hunter and the other is essentially a vegetarian based forager, although I don't remember who's who.

There is another kind, polistes dominilus, that is very docile, builds open hanging nests, considered invasive but well established, and is fun to have in your greenhouse, they out-compete the yellow-jackets.

[ these pics were taken in sept. lower paradise meadows on a huckle-berry picnic , always a good place for a stroll on a "don't know what to do day" ].
