Did a quick day trip up to Larch Valley with dav1481 and some friends to check out the fall colours.

The valley is beautiful but the crowds are a little overwhelming as I think every visitor to Banff Park was on the trail with us.

I will see if I can link the pics from my flickr site otherwise check the link at the bottom.

The light wasn't cooperating but got a few nice Fall photos:

Good times. I've never seen so many people on a trail before, but I do tend to avoid these places usually. From Sentinel Pass it looked like ants marching *cue Dave Matthews in my head*

Dave Matthews sings 'The ants go marching one by one"?
I can't blame so many people for visiting such a beautiful place. I'll do these trips once in a while despite the crowds, and balance with some little-visited areas.
On a lovely September day a few years ago, I captured 50 of these ants in a photo of a small area from a nice vantage above the pass.

Looks like you timed the colours right for those shots. Nice.

It was pretty nasty up there on the 26th but my Japanese friend didn't seem phased at all. After all, she's been up Mt. Fuji.

Ralph.

The pictures were definitely worth it, though. Here are a few of mine.

Larchy goodness!!! Good job getting pictures without tourists in them. Or did you get a real early start?

All you have to do to avoid crowds is wake up earlier. We left the parking lot at 8, which isn't really even early, on a busy day, passed a group of 6, and were the first ones up there and it was quiet for a while.

That's definitely the way to go. I remember getting an early start at Wilcox Peak earlier this summer and being the first up the mountain. The solitude in that popular location was priceless on a weekend.

We were there before 8 am to take some pics at the lake, but my friends didn't arrive until 11:00, which put us in line with the masses.

I counted 60+ people on the switchbacks and crest of Sentinel Pass in one of my photos and probably 70 percent of the trail users turned around well before reaching the bottom of the switchbacks so it was a very crowded trail.

Those are some beauty shots. To think we have a small grove of larches only one hour away, I wonder if they're in colour...OK who's going to post a Frosty Mtn. TR for me soon?
