I had planned on going to Index to check out Lake Serene today but life had other plans for me. I've lived in Bellingham for 15 years and have never hiked the Pine & Cedar trails on Chuckanut. I live only a few miles from the trailhead which makes it even more odd that I've never hiked them. It was perfect weather. I hit the trail, it went up & up & up & up & up. Barely any people, and even fewer bugs on the trail for how well used it looks. Finally it leveled out (as did my heart rate) and then dropped down to the lake. I loved all the boardwalks. One of them was doubled in a spot and looked like a funny passing lane, I had to laugh out loud at the thought. I wished I would have brought my fishing pole. Sat on a log and watch a dragonfly as I ate my lunch. I'm excited to go back up and explore some of the many trails that spur off it later in the week.

It's a particularly nice spring hike when higher trails are still snow covered. Plus amazing baked goods at the Colophon in Fairhaven!
