I came down south for an all too brief Visit to Vancouver and got to enjoy my time with Julia. At an evening potluck party with neighbours in North Van, I got better acquainted with Behrooz and discussed a desire of doing the Grouse Grind and a hike the next day. He was also interested so we set the plan to go ahead, we were at the Grind parking lot by 8:45 a.m. and found a huge crowd of 'Grinders' had down their workout and were heading home. No wonder, half way up the Grind it got very warm...... Armed with a bottle of powerade, despite feeling slow and ploddy on the latter half of the climb, I was surprised to do my personal best time. Behrooz also did his personal best. We relaxed around the chalet for a brief time, and then walked over to check out the grizzly bears. There was a large crowd viewing there.

Seems like they are discouraging people from walking down the Grind:

The bears put on a good show, one was chasing the other over a leg of beef?

From there we walked that gentle upsloping road towards Dam Mtn. The cut cliffs make for a good backdrop.

We wanted the trail straight up Dam Mtn, but ended up on the summer route heading towards Goat. That sign was not much help. A nice stop pic #4 with Thunderbird Ridge in the back.

The trail came to a fork; which one? We took the left to Little Goat.
Behrooz enjoyed the trail and the summit of Little Goat. But the flies were vicious, hungry, and taking their bites out of us. We put Goat off for another day, decided to head back and I suggested going over the Dam.

We had the Grouse chalet in our sights, a few interesting views towards Capilano Lake and a rather very steep gully way down.... Would be a very fast way of sliding down snow in the Winter.

Then this wooden tower, the end of the new 'chairlift' put in last year?

And then this boy carrying around his pet bird. I guess this one would eat a lot, 7 pounds of feather, bone, and claws.

We stopped briefly at the Chalet, it was close to 1 Pm when we headed down the Gondola a quick 5 minute ride to the parking lot (only $5)
Thus ended a very enjoyable 3 hour tour of the sights of bear, bird, and forest in our green part of the world.

Many thanks to Behrooz for joining me on this outing. A sharp contrast to all the snowy slopes during my last visit to Dam Mtn. and my first to top of Little Goat.

This is the new zipline that Grouse installed recently. I saw some people using it a few weeks ago. Lots of hooting & hollering.

I think the wooden structure is for the new zip-lines they have there. Looks like you had a great hike. Tough doing the grind before another hike.

Great to hear you made it back for a visit Karl, good lil report, awesome pics of trip especially the bears and eagle. Who the hell would want an eagle as a pet, afterall they represent freedom.

Thanks Saybe and Guntis for identifying it. I just could not come with a suitable description.

Thanks Mick and Chris for your comments, it was nice to come back for the short time and visit the local trails. Like that forest and trail scene...

Just returned as a survivor from the Emperor's Challenge, and will file a report on it. One thing that is rare in Tumbler Ridge is the crowds, there was one today over Babcock Mountain.

Thanks for the post..

Your pictures reminded me of my day of zip lines on Grouse.
Your shot at the sign post is the launch tower for line 5. I remember the garbage pile and closed sign.

We've been up to (& hiked down from) Grouse Chalet (& peaks beyond) twice this summer with our golden retriever & use the BCMC trail. The Grind is signed for no decent & no dogs, but the BCMC is fine. The bears were not happy with our dog being close, but the only access then (while they work on a new chairlift) was just uphill from the Grizzly's enclosure. We did not linger.

Here is a July 12'09 pic of Camel & Crown from the top of Goat (with Jesse of course).
