Yup, to get to the trail head requires a 4x4. Quite a few cross ditches to navigate and one of the ditches requiring some serious 4x4 low driving. Now it may be possible to go quite far before having to park the car and walking the rest to the trail head, the only problem is that you may be blocking the road as I can't remember a lot of places to pull over. You might be able to drive 7 of the 10 klicks.
The trail itself is well marked and doesn't take long to get to the summit (maybe 1.5 hours). If you are trying to find the crashed Navy bomber, from the summit you need to head down towards the ocean heading to port hardy, about an hour, then start looking on your right. Its hard to see and in very steep terrain.
