I'm heading up to the Mount Hooper area next weekend and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for routes, etc. I'm hoping to drive in from the Nanaimo River Road but I'm not sure which side of Fourth Lake the road I should take is on. (The backroad mapbook shows a bigger road on the west side, but on google earth it looks overgrown and the a more passable road is visible on the east side.)
If anyone has been up there recently, your help is appreciated. Thanks |

Well shit, I just double checked the TimberWest website and it too says the road past Second Lake is closed.
Thanks for the heads up.
I wonder if it's worth it to try to access Mount Hooper from the Nitinat side, or maybe I should just make some last minute trip changes. |

I got up in that area once by going up the Shaw valley (from the North side of Lake Cowichan). There is a gate so you need to cycle about 10 km to the base of Marmot Mt. (also called Big Ugly) and then basically go straight up to Balmer Lake. From there the route is straight forward.
I haven't tried to go around the Nitnat side before. |

Thanks for the info, I'll remember that for my next attempt.
We've decided to postpone Hooper and are doing Forbidden Plateau/Albert Edward instead! |
