This past weekend I was very disapointed with dog OWNERS...It has been mentioned times before on this forum yet I saw countless evidence that some pet owners out there just don't give a rats @$$ about other hikers or other dog owners or even their dogs for that matter.
Saturday we hiked into Galatea in K country and it was busy. There were lots of hikers just in for the day a few with dogs. Most dogs were leashed and so was ours as it was busy enough that we felt it was a good idea just to avoid any nasty looks even though our dog stays right with us.
One group of young ladies were camping and had two small dogs, a puggle that was only 4 months and some other older mixed terrier. The terrier apparently bit someone earlier that day and they decided to tie the two pets up at their tent and let them howl for hours while they enjoyed the beach. I walked by the 4 month old at one point and it was shivering with fear and was tangled in its rope. We played with the pup for a bit then went about our way. I had to really hold back from telling these people what I thought of their dog manners to avoid ruining my weekend. Atleast during the evening they brought the dogs around the campfire.
Admittedly we let our dog off leash during the evening to allow her to play with another unleashed dog. We only did so once everyone had finished with their cooking and we felt everyone was comfortable with the dogs around and everyone had a good laugh at them playing and running through the trees. Once they were done playing and out of energy ours went back on her leash. I guess I should have been the responsbile owner and asked if anyone had any issues with this prior but there were already 3 dogs running around unleashed.
On the way out the following day, many people were hiking in as we were leaving. We leashed our dog for most of the trail but unleashed her when we went down any inclines or wanted to cool her off in the stream. Anytime someone approached our dog sat off the side of the trail while others passed pulling their owners everywhich way. Overall I had no complaints about the dogs we ran into and we recieved many comments about how well behaved our dog was.
My biggest complaint is to the owners who's dog puked all over the trail at one point ahead of us and they left it there. Then again further down the trail there was evidence of this again. Then all the dog crap that was scattered along the trail then even worse at the trail head numerous doggy bags were hung from limbs in the trees as if they were christmas ornaments. It really made me feel that everyone would look at us and wonder if we were these offenders.
I don't blame any of this on dogs, they are only as well mannered as their owners. I really hope these parks continue to allow the "good" dog owners to use these parks.
anyways thats my rant... |

People suck. There are some exceptions.
Just like with children, some people are simply not prepared to take on responsibility. |

Sound like you are one of the people you are compaining about.

Nice justification. Other people are doing it, so will I even though I am on here moaning about others doing it.

Actually T2C I was in the same campsite and I know which couple this was. They kept their dog leashed most of the time and even when off leash their dog would stay close to them or return when told too. I agree, the three females that chose to get pissed all day Saturday and leave their pets leashed at the tent were pretty irresponsible. Firstly, what the hell were they thinking when it was decided to bring in a pair of lap-dogs? A 4 month old pup to boot! If it wasn't their dogs whining it was them making a shit load of noise after dark.
friendofacatahoula; my buddy and I were the ones you two spoke with about different types of stoves etc.. We both thought your dog was well mannered and didn't mind while she romped around with the big white poodle looking hound, especially while she teased him for the stick. Funny what can provide amusement. |

Personally I have no problem with offleash dogs when they are described as above. Just found the reasoning a bit off. After rereading the op, I have to admit that I misread a bit. |

friend... I hear your pain. As a dog owner myself I encounter all kinds of miserable situations from other dog owners with bad dog owner ettiquette. Sounds like you have a lovely, well-behaved dog. Hope the experience didn't put too much of a damper on your weekend. |

time2clmb -
I was being honest and open to the fact that yes I was being a little irresponsbile when I chose to let my dog play as well, but it was after a number of people suggested we do so. What I didn't feel I should have to do is ask permission for the other dogs. None of the dogs were being a nuisance to people when they were playing. I can only guess if you are a pet owner you are perfect one since you feel I am moaning about other's and never let your good intentions of a happy puppy get in the way.
darrenbell -
thanks for the compliment. I was trying to be nice in leaving out the fact they were more interested in drinking than taking care of their pets but I give them credit for dragging that much beer and vodka 6km up the mountain.
edit - in reading my reply it sounds rather arguementative towards time2clmb but in regards to my original post, it was the lack of trail etiquette that really disapointed me with all the droppings being discarded and the people who abandoned their dogs. I will take into account on future outtings that I should be more considerate of my fellow campers should I want to let my dog play and seek approval but as the saying goes it is easier to ask for forgiveness than permission and I failed as a responsbile dog owner. |
